HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSMINUTES061407WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES June 14, 2007 Meeting called to order at 2:03 PM. Attendees: Carolyn Sacchi, Mary Lee Gray, Elizabeth Young, Jo Lukens, Joan Johnson, Cathy Wright, Joe Graf, and Craft Hughes Absent were John Neighbors, Stan McCandless, Mary Ryerson, Betty Aillet, Lyndon McKnight, and Maureen Beck. Staff member present was Toby Dykema. Guest present was Mayor Bob Kelly. Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda and approved. Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed REPORTS APAC: An organization titled Care for Elders has established a web site (takechargeweb.info) that provides valuable information for Seniors and their caregivers. There is no charge for the compilation of this valuable and extensive information. Our Senior Service services are accessible from this website. Houston Community College along with APAC and others are offering a home-caregiver class for non- professionals sometime this Fall. It will be an eight hour class on a Saturday APAC received a report on the legislation recently passed. The Silver Alert (as in Amber Alert) did pass, but the intensified background check for professional health care providers did not. COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: Mayor Kelly told the Board that during the first three meetings that he and Council were sworn in, visited in depth with department heads and toured the city. Councilman Bob Fry was elected Mayor Pro Tem, and it was decided that Councilman Chuck Guffy will be our liaison. Council intends to begin setting goals and priorities for the City. Funding was approved for the sidewalk program. Council is waiting on an updated quote for the streetlights. The drainage on College will definitely be a priority. The Council is also trying to settle the Marlowe property litigation related to zoning, and will eventually get back to trying to locate a new neighborhood park in our mid town area. GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: Next meeting is next Thursday at 2:00 PM. The July 41h gift bags will be readied for distribution to Seniors on Wednesday, June 271i. Volunteers are needed to help with distribution. This opportunity is also used to see if any Seniors are in need of assistance. HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Still in the planning stage and expected to be ready for mailing in early August. Craft Hughes is preparing a report on wills and probate for the Newsletter. ACTIVITY REPORT: Activities slow down during vacation time. They included Secret Service Presentation on Identity Theft, Fire Safety, Yoga, and a Broadway Theme meal. Antiques With Dominique was well attended. Tours of Chapel Hill and Painted Churches are planned. A Lake Houston camping trip is in the works. PREVIOUS BUSINESS: Senior Services' new car is here and ready. There was considerable discussion of van versus bus and about the wheel chair ramp. Staff is using voter registration information to update their sixty-plus aged citizens. NEW BUSINESS: Parks Board member has suggested that Senior Services might want to be responsible for the maintenance of an Eagle Scout project that will beautify the area between Senior Services and the Library. The Board will have a summer recess for July and August, unless Staff needs us to convene. ANNOUNCEMENTS: John Neighbors will be awarded (for the second time) Citizen of the Year at a Southwest Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Our garage sale is moving to the Spring.
