Attendees: Stan McCandless, Carolyn Sacchi, Cathy Wright, Mary Lee Gray, Joe Graf, Elizabeth Young, Craft Hughes, Jo Lukens, Mary Ryerson, Betty Aillet and Joan Johnson. Absent were John Neighbors, Lyndon McKnight and Maureen Beck. Staff member present was Toby Dykema. Council member present was Steven Segal. Guests present were Dorothy Zinc, Mayoral Candidate Bob Kelly, and City Council Candidates Philip Bryant, Chuck Guffey and Bob Fry. Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda and approved. Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed. REPORTS APAC: Volunteer information and a Paving for Medicare article were given to the Board. APAC issued a plea for support for the Older Americans Act to include e-mailing representatives for more funding. May is Older Americans Month. COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: On first reading, Council approved an ordinance to limit the height of porches extending into the front setback. (If the front setback is twenty feet, the maximum height of the porch is twenty feet.) There was continued discussion about a possible land swap with the church, but Council authorized PGAL to provide a basic design of a new police station on City land. Some difficulties were encountered in setting dates for discussion groups and town hall meetings concerning the development of the City's park properties. At lunch on Friday, Council will try to finalize the dates. Also on Friday, Council will discuss the possible changes to the cost of employee health insurance. Council received only one bid for the old fire truck (after purchasing a new truck). Council will consider the sale at the $1,626.26 price to the Lone Star Fire Museum, or whether to submit it to auction. There is some question as to fair market value (possibly $5,000). Council approved drainage improvements to Colonial Park's open area (at a cost of $5,800) to be funded by the Friends of the WU Parks Fund, Inc. Council discussed a possible Mutual Aid Agreement with Bellaire to allow them to use the WU Rec. Center pool for 2.5 hours a day for several summer weeks, when the pool is not in use. Their summer camp pool will be out of commission. Further discussions are pending, if Bellaire formally requests use privileges. Council approved an amendment to drainage plans affecting College and Bellaire Blvd. improvements. GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: Approximately 144 Spring baskets of flowers and candy were delivered (and well received) by the GNT. HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Newsletter went to the Downtown post office last Monday. The Newsletter is in the process of updating its mailing list for those that have recently turned sixty-five. ACTIVITY REPORT: Activities included a trip to Navasota and the Huntsville Prison Museum. The theme meal was "Backwards". Activities are well attended. Staff is interested in organizing an Active Adult Activity Club that might participate in events such as overnight cabin camping. PREVIOUS BUSINESS: A thank-you from Medical Bridges for our pill box donation was read to the Board. Eyeglasses, walkers and canes are also needed. NEW BUSINESS: Dorothy Zinc asked for support in keeping the old fire truck intact with the Lone Star Fire Museum, as opposed to seeing it parted out after auction ANNOUNCEMENTS: Seniors should be made aware at some reasonable point in time that the Sierra Medical Plan is being cancelled at end of year. Meeting Adjourned at 2:28 PM and Board met afterwards with candidates/guests
