Attendees: John Neighbors, Stan McCandless, Carolyn Sacchi, Cathy Wright, Elizabeth Young, Mary Lee Gray, Mary Ryerson, Lyndon McKnight, Joe Graf, and Jo Lukens. Absent were Maureen Beck, Betty Aillet, Craft Hughes, and Joan Johnson. Staff member present was Toby Dykema Council member present was Steven Segal. Guests present were Police Chief Ken Walker and Dorothy Zink. Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda and approved. Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed. REPORTS APAC: APAC was informed about a Sheriff's Deputy that offers a fifteen hour course with video and book for self defense for senior women. Toby will attempt to schedule him for 2008. An "un-met needs" questionnaire will be distributed to Board members to assist APAC in preparing their three year plan. This will be placed on our April agenda. Interesting census figures for the Harris County population that is sixty and over were shared with the Board. There are 424,000 seniors in this category in 2007. COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: A tentative agreement has been reached with the City of Houston (subject to negotiation and execution of an inter-local agreement) to pay for the Kirby sidewalks on the east side of West U between University and Bellaire Blvd. Our City will design and supervise the project by our contractor, and Houston will pay for it. Council extended and expanded the contract with Metro to add additional sidewalks to complete the sidewalk master plan. A representative from Comcast Cable described the changes to derive from the takeover of Time Warner's operations. The proposed ordinance change for front porches was discussed and tabled. An election for Mayor, Council and for Charter amendments was called for May 12th. Council discussed an ordinance change for portable storage units to be voted on next Monday. There is ongoing and long term discussion with WUP Baptist Church over a possible property exchange, intended to benefit both the City and the Church. Also discussed were property and facility master planning and the expansion and renovation of City Facilities for General Operations, Public Safety and Emergency Operations. Council's next agenda is to include an interview with Dave Agerton about appointment to the Parks and Recreation Board, a Marlowe house update (closed session), planning and implementation of streetlight improvements, a 2006 budget amendment and Mayor Ballanfont's resignation. (The Mayor will resign his position with the City to become a member of the METRO Board.) GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: Several members met to address Valentine cards. This will suffice as the February meeting. Three volunteers are calling Seniors with whom there has not been contact in sometime. HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Work in progress. ACTIVITY REPORT: The opera activities and theme meal were well attended. The San Antonio trip was a mixed bag of plusses and minuses, partly due to such factors as the weather. Thirty people attended the You Only Die Once presentation. A trip to Texas City is planned for Valentines. PREVIOUS BUSINESS: John Neighbors met with Kyle Jannek and Ellen Cohen. The have expressed an interest in addressing the Board in May or June. The next step will be for him to locate a jeweler or jewelers willing to assist the program, and contacting the local Jewelers Association was suggested. NEW BUSINESS: Volunteers will be going door-to-door to distribute recycling information to citizens. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Used pill bottles are needed by the Medical Bridges group.
