WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
9/14/06
Meeting called to order at 2:02 PM.
Attendees: John Neighbors, Joe Graf, Carolyn Sacchi, Cathy Wright, Jo Lukens , Betty Aillet,
Mary Lee Gray, Mary Ryerson, Craft Hughes and Lyndon McKnight Absent were Stan
McCandless, Joan Johnson, Elizabeth Young, Maureen Beck, and Byron Prater. Staff member
present was Toby Dykema and Tim O'Connor. Visitor present was Chief of Police Ken Walker.
Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda.
Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed
REPORTS
APAC: Mary Lee Reported on a program sponsored by Oasis, Active Living Every Day, an
outreach program. Is designed to go to various sites and help get non-active seniors involved:
physically, emotionally, socially in a fun setting. Toby has contacted them twice and never
gotten a response back.
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: John Neighbors mentioned the reviewing the charter and
how the process works. Every 6 years a committee of 7 citizens appointed by city council
reviews it. Public Hearing scheduled on October 13 at 5:30 PM in city hall.
GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: Still working on the Garage Sale, scheduled for Friday, October
6. Looking for volunteers. Proceeds will go to both the handymen and to help with the baskets
delivered three times a year.
HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Working on the Winter 2007 newsletters, taking any
suggestions for trips and topics.
ACTIVITY REPORT: Activities included Second Hand Shopping, Galveston Ghost Trip, Jazz
Theme Meal, A Swamp and River Tour in Orange, TX, along with several presentations.
Regular scheduled activities are also well attended.
Ken Walker: There had been some concern with new officers not having the history and the
intimidation factor that often comes with dealing with an officer. All new officers take part in a
Field Training Program, 11-14 weeks depending on each officer. In that training Senior Services
and the resources available to the officers on duty is touched upon. Several new officers have
stopped by senior services to introduce themselves.
NEW BUSINESS: Director of Parks and Recreation, Tim O'Connor discussed the bond
election informing board members they would be receiving an information packet regarding the
bond. Michael Ross and Tim O'Connor will be presenting at the neat board meeting scheduled
in October.
