WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
2/9/2006
Meeting called to order at 3:00 PM.
Attendees: John Neighbors, Joe Graf, Carolyn Sacchi, Cathy Wright, Elizabeth Young, Joan Johnson, Betty
Aillet, Lyndon McKnight, Jo Lukens, Mary Lee Gray, and Maureen Beck. Absent were Stan McCandless and
Mary Ryerson. Staff member present was Toby Dykema. Council member present was Steven Segal Guest
present was Bernard Wright. Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda and approved
with no changes.
Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed.
REPORTS
APAC: The City of Houston has designed a preparedness form to register those in need of special assistance
during an emergency, such as a hurricane. The Jewish Community Center is hosting a Senior Olympics from
3/23 to 4/2 and needs volunteers. Representative Scott Hochberg from Sharpstown spoke at the meeting about
the Texas initiative to compile a list of reputable druggists in Canada from which citizens can purchase less costly
drugs. Minnesota has already compiled such a list and it is available from their website. The approval of lines of
credit for reverse mortgages was also announced.
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: At the 1/26 Council meeting negotiations were approved with Alan Petrov
(Johnson Radcliffe Petrov & Babbitt PLLC, for new City Attorney. Jim Dougherty will assist the ZPC, ZBA and
BSC. The 2/13 agenda will include Approval of the letter of engagement with the new City Attorney, the boot
camp concerns, and the Rice Pocket Park/Library Courtyard proposal To Council and their request to continue
with design.
GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: The Better Business Bureau gave a Medicare fraud presentation. We have
ordered pamphlets that assist in deciphering Medicare Explanation of Benefits in order to determine if you have
been unknowingly used for fraudulent purposes.
HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Newsletter in progress. Toby asked for recommendations for a featured
resident.
ACTIVITY REPORT: The activities included a trip to El Campo and interesting museums there, the Diana
display, a pajama party, and the Texas Museum in the Downtown Library. A new computer instructor has been
recruited and we now have three classes and four laptops. A walking group activity and a yoga class are in the
works.
MASTER PARKS PLANNING TASK FORCE REPORT: A well attended public hearing was held on 2/6.
Timing of project initiation and completion was discussed. The Task Force is very close to presenting their plan
to Council.
PREVIOUS BUSINESS: The issues of activity space and non-resident fees were re-visited. Some groups are
opposed to moving to the Rec. Center and want to remain in our building. The Board agreed that residents must
receive activity priority. A poll of the Board made clear that the idea of a membership card for activities was not
an acceptable alternative for resident, non-resident and administrative reasons. Extensive discussion preceded
this poll.
NEW BUSINESS: Harris County Social Services is offering free, non-emergency transportation for qualified
residents. Service will be available from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. West University is
included in this offering this may well supplement Senior Services transportation operations.
