WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
12/08/2005
Meeting called to order at 3:00 PM.
Attendees: John Neighbors, Stan McCandless, Joe Graf, Carolyn Sacchi, Cathy Wright, Elizabeth Young,
Joan Johnson, Mary Ryerson, Betty Aillet, Lyndon McKnight, Maureen Beck, and Jo Lukens. Staff present
was Toby Dykema. Council member present was Steven Segal. Guests present were Cecille Sutter and Mary
Lee Gray.
Previous meetings minutes were sent to Board members with agenda and approved with no changes.
Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed.
REPORTS
APAC: They are working on the transportation system for seniors. Sent out surveys, bringing in a consultant
firm in to help determine the best route to go. Also will be holding a Medicare help session at the George R.
Brown Convention Center on Saturday, January 21. Looking for volunteers to help with this. Transportation
will be provided through metro
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: With regard to infrastructure, no progress yet in negotiations with the
surety bond company. Summary judgment motions in the Marlowe house case are to be reargued at the
Judge's request. Council adopted the zoning ordinances recently discussed affecting the 80% rule and
Administrative Officer. The Drought Contingency Plan Passed without the wording "hand-held" hose. Hoses
with sprinklers are allowed. Council approved appointment of Boards and Commissions. The Senior Board
has two vacancies. City Council is reviewing the Master Sidewalk Plan. At the last meeting, Council
modified the Plan to increase the placement of sidewalks, adding the "other side" in places only one side was
indicated. Additional areas will be considered in future meetings.
GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: The next project is to pass out Poinsettias to approximately 150 seniors, and
volunteers are needed for 12/15/05. The volunteers will make an effort to see the seniors in person and assess
any needs they may have for the seniors personally and/or their premises. Any needs will be reported to
Senior Services.
HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: The Newsletter is expected from the printer at any moment and will
most likely go out next week.
ACTIVITY REPORT: The activities included The Christmas Carol, birding in Montgomery County, Opera
in the Heights, a vineyard in Sugar Land and antiquing. Bingo and Bridge are flourishing. Opera class will
commence in January.
MASTER PARKS PLANNING TASK FORCE REPORT: The five focus groups' information is being
compiled for a sixth focus group or task force to evaluate. Senior Board members are invited to participate in
this process at a meeting on Wednesday January 4th at 11:30 at the Rec Center. Lunch will be provided.
PREVIOUS BUSINESS: None.
NEW BUSINESS: An e-mail regarding car-jacking and a credit card scam were brought to the Board's
attention.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: There will be a holiday luncheon on December 20th at the Baptist Church.
Volunteers are needed.
