Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed.
REPORTS
APAC: The United Way hosted a meeting of Texas participants in the Forum for the White House
Council on Aging, which has been moved back from October to December. Our representatives to the
Council were introduced. Specific concerns were iterated to include transportation to outlying
cities/counties, prescription drugs, medical devices, and the fact that Texas medical schools do not
require classes on geriatrics. Specific remedies were requested by participants.
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: Council heard final readings of all ordinances read at the previous
meeting. Assistance to a needy Senior with water/sewer connection problems was approved. A closed
executive session was held to address legal problems the City has with the Marlow suit, and with the
CTI contractor that filed for bankruptcy.
GOOD NEIGHBOR TEAM: Health Fair was not necessarily of value to the Team. Only non-
residents received Team information. The Fourth of July basket delivery planning is ongoing.
Magnifying lenses are needed for the baskets. Delivery is scheduled for June 30th. It was suggested that
information about Words on Wheels and information on Retired Volunteers Insurance (RSVP) be
included in the baskets (and in the Newsletter).
HI NEIGHBOR NEWSLETTER: Newsletter is continuing development for a September-December
issue. Newsletter should be ready for the post office at the end of the month. It will also have a page in
the Parks and Recreation guide to help with advertising.
ACTIVITY REPORT: The activities consisted of a visit to a peach orchard, the Health Fair, Houston
Visitors Center, Prime Time Singers at the theme lunch, Steel Magnolias at the Alley Theatre, a tour of
four retirement facilities, a PBS broadcast at Channel 8, and a speaker on the history of West
University. Spanish classed are resuming, and the regularly scheduled activities are well attended.
MASTER PARKS PLANNING TASK FORCE REPORT: The Task Force is now assessing indoor
facilities under its jurisdiction. The good aspects and the "in need of improvement" aspects are being
enumerated and rated on a scale of one to five. Focus groups for various facilities will be formed to
compile specific recommendations.
PREVIOUS BUSINESS: A long term insurance health care panel is being formed. Obtaining
credentials for panel members was requested. Kay Holloway will be sending each Board member a
letter that will need to be returned to her if Board members are interested in holding an ongoing position
on the Board. Two positions are open at this time.
NEW BUSINESS: A volunteer that will conduct Suddenly Single classes each Tuesday in September
will address the financial concerns of spouses that are dealing with these problems due to death, divorce
or separation. A purchase order for a projector to hold Movie Day has been completed. A purchase
order for four laptop computers and separate keyboards with mouse has also been completed. At least
one fall class for eight participates will be initiated. It is anticipated that more time slots will need to be
allocated. Carolyn Sacchi voiced a heartfelt appreciation to Rotary for their work on her garage.
