March 13, 2025
I. Call to Order: Ann Crowley, president, call the meeting to order at 2:03 PM.
II. Attending: Ann Crowley, George Hilderbrandt, Kay Bryan, Debbie Pedrick, Karen Kenny,
Soraya
Brombacher, Candyce Beneke, Eileen O’Neil, Diana Ayers
Absent: Robin Burks, Teresa George-Hung, Geri Wood, Gloria Nino Monacelli, Laura Turley,
Jennifer Sickman
Also Absent: John Montgomery, City Council Liaison
Guests: Bruce Beneke, Mardi Turner, Lynn Smith, Carlos Delatorre, Alida Drewes, Linda Smith
III. Approval of Minutes: Minutes from Jan 9 and Feb 13 approved.
IV. Dave Beach, City Manager: gave an update on city election. Prop D is the bond for the
library and community building. There are strict guidelines regarding advocacy. As Senior
Board members we can discuss the who, what & where—Not why while in our role as
board members. As individual citizens we are free to discuss why the bond is needed
and advocate for it. City’s website has all the election information including a calculator
where residents can enter their property value and see the impact of their own property
taxes.
Dave also gave the council update.
City is starting a water rate study to see if the tiered system is saving money.
Work on waste water treatment plant was approved and should begin next
month. The paving on Rice Blvd , between Wakeforest and Kirby was not up to
specifications and portions will be re-done.
City purchased the lot at the corner of College and Amherst.
New Public works building has broken ground, should be completed by Jan 2026. There
is a time lapse video
V. PGAL Report —Justine Markowski
Justine shared new potential layouts for the library and community building given the addition
of the piece of land just purchased. Size of the buildings still at 21000 sq. ft. Two large rooms
with high ceilings. Library and Community building convenient access to each other, covered
drop off. Smaller tank will be gone. Pump room will be next to the new dual tank.
VI. Monthly reports:
A. Senior Services-Michelle Blunt:
a. Zero Waste compost project is in the works,
b. chair volleyball had a tournament,
c. Mahjong is exploding,
d. new publication should be out soon.
B. Parks & Rec - Susan White:
a. Fee schedule will stay the same for next year, Laura Turley is our rep on it.
b. Department is evaluating new recreation software. They need a new user
group to sample apps.
c. Colonial Park West improvements are underway.
d. Special events—Arts in the Park March 29, Performances 4/4 &4/11; Easter
Spring Fest 4/12
e. Survey:
i. 1250 responses to survey. Most agreement on expanding cardio and
weight room, repurposing racquetball courts.
f. Dept. is proposing new ordinances—No “ebikes” in parks.
g. Give Parks Director power to allow animals at special events, puppy yoga, owl
demo etc.
C. Good Neighbor Team-Soraya Brombacher:
—GNT serves 130 Households 28 are couples—total 158 Group has 41
volunteers. In April the delivery is a safety tube where people put their
emergency contact information, medication list etc. Should be kept on top of
fridge or in the freezer. The are also getting bells for doors and Easter candy.
D. APAC - Karen Kenny:
Karen mentioned the AARP good Neighbor information.
There is concern about federal funding cuts impacting programs
Dementia Friendly City working with police and fire on recognizing dementia.
Also, connections with music and dementia.
Karen is going to find out more and present at our April meeting.
