ORDINANCE NUMBER 987
AN ORDINANCE CALLING AN ELECTION WITHIN THE CITY OF
WEST UNIVERSITY PLACE, TEXAS FOR THE SEVENTH DAY OF
NOVEMBER, 1972, FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELECTING A MAYOR
AND FOUR (4) COMMISSIONERS TO SERVE FOR A TERM OF TWO
(2) YEARS EACH; DESIGNATING THE POLLING PLACES; APPOINT-
ING ELECTION OFFICIALS AND PROVIDING FOR THEIR PAY;
PROVIDING THAT ALL DULY QUALIFIED RESIDENT ELECTORS
SHALL BE QUALIFIED TO VOTE; PRESCRIBING THE FORM OF BAL-
LOT; PROVIDING FOR NOTICE OF ELECTION; CONTAINING OTHER
PROVISIONS RELATING TO SAID ELECTION AND PROVIDING FOR
SEVERABILITY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF WEST UNIVERSITY
PLACE, TEXAS:
Section 1. That a general election shall be held in the City of West
University Place, Texas on November 7, 1972, being the first Tuesday following
the first Monday in November, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and four (4)
Commissioners of said city, each to serve a full two (2) year term.
Section 2. That said election shall be held in each of the four (4)
election precincts heretofore establ ished by the Commissioners I Court of Harris
County, Texas, and the following presiding election judges and alternate pre-
siding election judges be appointed, to-wit:

Each poll ing place and the polls thereat shall be open from 7:00 a.m. to
7:00 p.m. on said election date. There shall be two (2) clerks for each
election precinct to be appointed by the presiding judge for each such precinct.
Section 3. The judges and clerks of said election shall receive com-
pensation for conducting the election and fi1 ing the returns in accordance with
the provisions of Article 3.08 of the Texas Election Code, titled Pay of Judges
and Clerks.

Section 4. Ballots in such election shall be voted by use of a
vot~ng machine of the type approved by the Secretary of State according to
Article 7. l4 of the Texas Election Code.
Section 5. That for absentee voting paper ballots shall be used and
absentee voting shall be conducted by the City Secretary and his assistants for
conducting absentee voting. The place where absentee voting shall be conducted
is the City Hall, 3800 University Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77005, which is
also the absentee voting official IS official address to which ballot app1 ica-
tions and ballots voted by mail may be sent. Said City Secretary and his as-
sistants shall keep said office open in accordance with the following schedule,
as required in Article 5.05 of the Texas Election Code, titled Absentee Voting:

Section 6. That notice of the election hereby ordered and called
shall be given by posting a copy of this ordinance and notice ordering the
election, signed by the Mayor, at the proper place at each of the respective
poll ing places as designated herein, said notice to be posted not less than
twenty (20) days prior to the date set herein for such election.
Section 7. That all duly qual ified resident electors of the City
of West University Place shall be qual ified to vote.
Section 8. That the City Secretary is hereby directed to give
notice of said election in accordance with law.
Section 9. If any section, sentence, clause, phrase or portion of
this ordinance shall for any reason be held invalid or unconstitutional by
any court of competent jurisdiction, such shall not affect the val idity of
the remaining provisions thereof.
