HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 2024Senior Board Meeting October 10, 2024 at 2:00 pm  Community Center Presiding: Ann Crowley (Chair) The meeting was called to order at 2:00 pm Attendance: Present: Laura Turley, Candyce Beneke, Karen Kenny, Geri Wood, Soraya Brombacher, Diana Ayers, Ann Crowley, Robin Burks, Eileen O’Neil, Jennifer Sickman, John Montgomery (Council Liaison), Kay Bryan, Susan White, George Hildebrandt, Debbie Pedrick, Teresa George-Hung, Toby Brooks Guests: Dick Yehle, John Barnes, Lynn Smith Previous Minutes Approval: Motion to approve the minutes by Laura T., seconded by Karen Kenny Updates & Action Items: Recipe Book Sales: Recipe books are ready (225 copies). Volunteers are encouraged to schedule time to assist with sales, particularly during morning classes and events. Suggested marketing avenues include flyers, Next-door, and WUIE, with Soraya handling WUIE postings. The books are priced at approximately $20. Initial sale days are planned for November 5, 6, 12, and 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dick Yehle mentioned that West U Centennial books are priced at $10 and not even selling quickly. New Senior Center Site Walkthrough: Board members visited the proposed new facility site for the senior center and library. Three design plans—The Commons, Town Square, and West U Green—were discussed. Council appears to favor the WestU Green design without closing streets. Urban planning adjustments are being considered, including potential use of nearby church parking. Monthly Reports: Senior Center: Toby shared updates, including sending "Good Neighbor" and fall cards, fluctuating transportation needs, a new French class, and the ongoing popularity of pickleball. Patricia is working on the next newsletter for 2025. A volunteer appreciation lunch is scheduled for November 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day plans include a meal with participation from the Boy Scouts APAC Initiative: Karen provided updates on the “Are You OK?” project by Harris County, a weekly welfare call initiative similar to the Good Neighbor program. Counsel: Public Works Project Challenges: John M. reported that the company initially hired to oversee the public works project backed out, causing potential delays. Legal counsel is involved, and the bidding process must be reopened. Budget Concerns: Rising costs for projects such as the West-Side project, which requires vibration-resistant concrete, were discussed. John M. noted a tax rate reduction (24 cents per hundred dollars) and mentioned budget constraints in code enforcement. The senior center and library projects are still prioritized, with council support for completing these projects despite financial challenges. Wastewater Treatment Issues: Diana Ayers expressed concerns about relying on temporary fixes for wastewater treatment, especially after prior funding and cost increases. The board discussed ensuring long-term solutions rather than temporary "patches." Guest: John Barnes shared data and expressed concerns about fixing the wastewater treatment. Community and Council Support: The council remains supportive of the senior center and library projects despite concerns over unexpected costs. John M. encouraged community engagement and feedback. Parks & Rec: Upcoming Events: Halloween Dash and Monster Smash on October 29, featuring Lynn Smith as chef. The next town hall meeting is scheduled for November 12.
