G. Davis, presiding; Messrs. Campbell, Gill, gannsh, Rice and Wilson. The April 2nd request of Attorney Burke golman, representing the owners of prop- erty on Bellaire Boulevard between the Telephone Company Building and the Y.M.C.A., petitioning sa d property be rezoned from single, family dwel ing restriction to retail business use, as defined in Section V of the Zoning Ordinance, was again reviewed. Meanwhile, residents of adjoining property facing on Cason Street and residents of property immediately across Cason had, at an informal tn~eting held at the City gall May 22nd, voiced strong opposition to the proposed rezoning, and on June 2, 195, f led a signed petition {dated May 27) formally requesting that such rezoning be denied. After long and careful deliberation, the Board at its Meeting July 10, 1958, re- solved: 1. That zoning as prescribed by the. City of West University Place was designed mainly for the protection of residential property. 2. That the owners of property in the immediate vicinity, as well as residents of ..the City as a whole, are entitled to first con= sideration in the matter of any proposed rezoning. 3. That to date, there has been shown no urgent necessity for ad- ditional commercial property in this particular area,. to serve adequately the needs of the community. ~+. That in general, the immediate vicinity, as well as the com- munity as a whole would suffer more from the proposed re- zoning than in maintaining the status quo.
