(c) Achieving a 50% Solid Waste Diversion Rate Goal in West U-Ideas to Achieve
The Board discussed the importance of goal setting and Board consensus is needed. Mifflin
commented that the total impact on the environment and waste reduction is key. A
suggestion was made to have a 2023 place holder in the slide presentation.
(i) Gregory/Fehl food waste composting proposal
Gregory reviewed slides. Barnes suggested including keeping community outreach hyper-
local-such as West U Methodist, West U Baptist, etc. The slides don’t include the South
Campus ball fields or the Rec Center. Families with middle school and high school students
that participate in UCAL basketball could be included in outreach. Board members can
suggest to their neighbors that they sign up for one of the curbside compost collection
services. West U could sponsor a team to get X number to sign up for composting.
A suggestion was made to have a grassroots campaign to do composting. Other local
entities could be contacted such as the Studio 3 Salon and the Library.
Within 30-45 days, have roll-out with compost vendor data reports. Barnes suggested the
Board try to get on the City Council Agenda for March or April and go straight to
marketing on what the City is doing as a path forward, such that West U can post on
Nextdoor and other platforms. The Board will try to get on the March 27 Agenda to
provide slides and ask for Council support.
A question was raised as to whether the Board should ask for bin supplements that include
a free compost collection bin or availability at a reduced cost. A suggestion was made that
the Board prepare a request for what type of support we would like at Community events.
7) WEST U STAFF REPORT:
(a) West U Collects App Update
The Board adjourned so there was no report, other than to say the West U Collects App
Update is still in progress and no completion date is known presently.
(b) Food Waste RFQ Status
Orozco said the City would support advertising the compost collection services.
(c) Statistics on Solid Waste
The Board adjourned so there was no report.
