HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSBM 11.10.22Senior Board Meeting November 10, 2022 Minutes Presiding: Ann Crowley Call to Order 2:02 pm Roll Call: Present: George Baker, Candyce Beneke, Ann Crowley, George Hilderbrandt, Shannon Carroll, Toby Brooks, Diana Ayers, Mardi Turner, Tom Brombacher, Candace Tenbrink, Selby Clark, Allan Elkowitz Absent: Joan Johnson, Karen Kenney, Gloria Nino Monacelli, Teresa George-Hung Guests: John Barnes, Carlos de La Torre, Carol Nehihan Action Items I. Approve Previous Minutes a. George Hilderbrandt b. Selby Clark c. Minutes approved II. Citizen Comments: a. Carol Nehihan—Came to thank Senior Services for being such a helpful resource. She moved to WU in June 2022 and her husband had a health crisis, she felt very supported by Senior services. b. John Barnes—The Garden Club is up and running. Wugardenclub @gmail.com The next meeting will be Nov 17, 6:00pm at community center III. Strategy Team Report a. George Hilderbrandt spent time going over the most recent survey regarding Senior Services (2019, report from TX A&M in 2020) He looked at Senior responses(400-450) regarding parks, rec center and senior services. b. There were 3 categories; Awareness Usage Satisfaction In summary: Rec Center A-55% U-47% S-68% Parks A-51% U- S-81% Senior Services A-37% (21% answered not informed) U-27% (123 of 450) S- 38% (29% answered don’t know) Conclusions: Since there was other information on specific dissimilar programs that was lumped in with the results it was difficult to parse out relevant information. The survey had overall very positive responses, i.e. walkability, quick responses of emergency services, sidewalks, general programs. Areas of Strategic Focus 1. Be looped in for planning the new facility 2. Measurement—get specifics, form a committee to work on this 3. Communication to community needs to improve—email,website,mailouts,Hi neighbor, Selby suggested star review system like Amazon does. 4. Toby noted the city had hired a new communication coordinator since the survey was done. c. Candace Tenbrink—Moving Forward Where are we in Strategic Planning? We have our Mission and Vision statements completed and agreed upon. There are two ways to proceed—Top Down or Bottom Up The team recommends doing both. The team will work on top down (interviewing City council, staff, etc) Senior Board members will take on Bottom Up,( talking to neighbors, friends, seeking out users and non- users, all seniors and all residents)Safety, Wellness, community and Social engagement and Life long learning Prior to voting, Allan noted the old survey was probably out of date especially with COVID and society’s changing needs. Candyce B asked for more specifics Before voting. Ann described more on the general idea. Candace T suggested we vote on 3 options— Top Down 1 Bottom up 0 Hybrid doing both 10 votes Discussion followed on need for a template, or questions for Bd Members to use when interviewing. George B, Candyce B & Ann will meet and come up with this prior to our Dec meeting. IV. Current Building Usage Ann reported that Toby and Patricia are keeping records of the usage of all the rooms in the community center in order to best use what we have. Mahjong and Pickle Ball are both booming. They have just moved the games tables into the larger activity room so it can now accommodate 9 or 10 tables of 4 rather than 6. George B. ideas for new center: Lounge, coffee, arts & crafts room with sink, art exhibit area, music room. As you come upon ideas send to George. V. Mont Belvieu field Trip. Toby will send out date choices so Bd Members can sign up. It is an opportunity to look at an excellent example of o comor munity building. VI. Monthly Reports a. Karen sent in her APAC report b. Good Neighbor Team- Mardi reported the Thanksgiving cards were sent, An upcoming lecture on fraud and scams. Poinsettias will be coming in Dec. If anyone can help deliver let Mardi know. c. Parks Keep your eye out for the Holiday events. Tom B will be Santa again this year. d. Senior Services toby reported the new newsletter should be out soon covering Jan to March 2023. Word of Mouth still her best advertising tool. Field trips going well. Visit to Botanic Garden and Raptor center Christmas Concert with Rice concert band Jan another Comedy night Chamber Orchestra event with the Library Thanksgiving Day meal has a wait list for non-residents Getting wait lists for trips now. e. Shannon Carroll -Council liaison Waste Water Treatment and Sewer Plant work being completed Public Works Building is in design phase. New location on Westpark, public facing so aesthetics are important. Need for spaces where employees have to spend the night when needed restrooms and green spaces. Houston marathon scheduled for Jan 15th will run down University again. VII. Motion to adjourn- 3:15 pm a. Tom B b. Diana A
