Call to Order: Chair Ann Crowley II. Attendance — Karen Kenny, Toby Brooks, Selby Clarks, Ann Crowley, George Hildebrandt, Allan Elkowitz, Susan white, Joan Johnson, Mardi Turner, Diane Ayers, Susan a. Absent George Baker, Tom Brombacher, Candace TenBrink, Candyce Beneke, Shannon Caroll (Council Liaison) III. Approval of Minutes from May 12, 2022 a. Correction by Karen Kenny — she was absent. Correction was made. b. Motion to approve by Diana and seconded by Selby — all in favor IV. Citizen Comments: John Barnes Sunday 19th 3pm garden club meeting 3419 Plum Street. All are welcome. a. Would like to make it a 501(3c) if possible. b. Focus on education of bees, pollinators, multigenerational, nature discovery center. V. Candace T & Team Progress Report — George H. Will be representing for Candace TenBrink a. There is no information regarding this project. b. What Ann Crowley knows — was looking at aggregate data and see what is programs are done and who they serve etc. It would be going on to the fall. c. Karen Kenny/Ann —naming a place will be on hold. There is some information about a choir. Alzheimer’s and covid have increased fatality. So Karen is backing off for a while, but she’s going to look into it in the fall with the 4th booster being in place. VI. Ann passed out notes for what makes West U good for us? a. George Hilderbrandt —Great environment for seniors and what are we aiming for. We are trying to find a description that isn’t too unattainably ideal. The best life we can as seniors. b. Diana Ayers — feels like a small town. It feels like a neighborhood. We really like talking to our neighbors. c. Joan Johnson — Living in a bubble that is safe and we have neighbors inside and outside WestU and it feels safe. d. Susan White — is the intent of the mission statement code of ordinances? Is it to be integrated into the code of ordinances? Ann — this is an enhancement and addition. Toby Brooks — it’s already on the website. e. Selby — our property value has been very good and continues to be good every year. So if youre on a fixed income as a senior, the property value and taxes don’t jump largely to affect the seniors. f. Ann Crowley — good public schools especially for us. VII. Skill Sharing: a. What are we thinking about it? Nothing has been done. b. Mardi — WestU Information source and next door provide this resource. c. Skillshare will be put on hiatus — will look into this matter again in the fall. VIII. Diana Ayer’s — libraries and library cards — provide benefits for members. We don’t provide anything. Library freebies — to learn language — mango a. Free resources for seniors would be great to enhance their access to the world. IX. Supporting events/ communication opportunities — Ann Crowley — patio in the park events would be great for older people. I really want people to make effort to invite and promote events to neighbors and to come out. Edloe pathway will be done and seniors should be helpful in the opening of it. Selby Clark — would like a bench or something paid for? X. Monthly reports: a. APAC --Karen Kenny i. Presentation —older Americans act. As soon as I receive it. APAC is not meeting next month. It will meet back up in August. b. Good Neighbor Team—Mardi Turner — Hot and hot. We have a delivery in about 10 days and we will have some hurricane and July 4th soon. Emergency — WestU ready June 16th. Please sign up to get notices. Go into the city’s website —WestU ready and press release and it will lead to you it. It’s on the app as well. c. Parks and Recreation –Susan White, party on the patio calendar — in July. Yesterday was the first day for regular swimming at the pool. Go to city website and check out the concert lists. Very last one is fab 5. It is a true multigenerational function. You can come via the side and it’s free. i. The committee met to talk about fees— resident and non resident fees. Teresa and Candyce Beneke partook. Residents get 10% off. The programming subcommittee was not able to get to a consensus. Seniors will be charged 50% discount. ii. Edloe—sad news didn’t get the grants and funding from the Texas Wildlife. We also didn’t get the AARP grant. Now we’re going to move forward with the project and will try to find the funding for this. iii. Tennis and pickle ball — companies will be coming out next week to erect the pickle ball stripes. Weir Park will have it soon! Ordinances will prohibit for profit instructors from using the tennis courts and facilities. Their instructor can do it via the Parks and Rec department. Provide proof of insurance, and they need to share revenue with us. XI. Senior Services—Toby Brooks — not much the theme meals are slowly back up. a. New volunteer to help Ed, and they are getting 40-50 people. The support group is still going on. b. The tech help is not filling up. We are trying to fill it up. For the whole month of June there will be someone to help with (12-2 Fridays only)— a teenager will give one on one c. Intergenerational Octoberfest. d. We have a new drawing class e. We have a zoo trip f. We are going to have holiday photos g. Tarot card readings in October. Lots of new stuff in h. Senior Services got a new bus XII. Council Liaison—John Barnes will be representing as Shannon Carroll is out. a. Virtual gates up and running June 1st b. Milton street water line being repaired. c.
