HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSBM 3.10.22West University Place SENIORS BOARD MEETING March 10, 2022 Presiding: Ann Crowley (Chair) The meeting is called to order at 2:00 PM Roll Call: • Present: Ann Crowley, George Hildebrandt, George Baker, Teresa George-Hung, Karen Kenny, Selby Clark, Tom Brombacher, Candace TenBrink, Candyce Beneke, Susan Davis, Mardi Turner, Toby Brooks, Shannon Carroll (Council Lia • Absent: Gloria Nino Monacelli, Diana Ayers, Allan Elkowitz, Joan Johnson • Guests: Carlos De Le Torre and John Barnes Action Items: 1. Approve minutes: a. Issues with minutes so it was decided this would be the last item to go over. b. Candyce and Teresa went over this post meeting. So, meetings were approved. c. Approved by Karen Kenny and seconded by Selby Clark (towards end of meeting) 2. Order switched due to Candace TenBrink having a work meeting to attend to. Candace T. presented the following information: a. Went to city council and presented the mission statement. Was approved by the council. b. Vision statement committee for board occurred at her house. i. Good meeting and on the right track but not complete yet. ii. Still waiting to get a succinct sentence or sentences for mission statement. c. Strategic planning committee to be put together. i. Moving towards that and need members. If interested, please contact her directly for sign up. 3. Senior Board Challenge updates was initiated by Ann Crowley: a. Candace Tenbrink — did all of the challenge. b. Karen Kenny — went to all of the parks i. A bench would be great to have ii. Went to Mahjong — women were younger than she thought. So that was a surprise. c. Candyce Beneke — went to heart hop (Valentine party) —It was a fabulous event and was planned by Post Oak Chapter of National Charity League d. Mardi – Tai Chi class Monday-Wednesday here i. AARP taxes here. ii. Communication lectures — driving under the influence of dementia — no one was there for the driver. 1. Sidenote: City communication — no one showed up except me. e. George Baker — went to the Tai Chi class on Monday i. Toby walked George Baker helped get him involved with Mexican dominoes with youngsters ii. Also, he participated in a jump roping contest with youngsters who are student athletes f. Teresa George Hung – Went to Weir Park and rec center. g. Susan Davis – didn’t participate due to schedule but will be checking out events later. h. Shannon — went to heart hop with kids and seniors and had fun dancing i. Made it to communication meeting and would like to see more senior board members in more meetings i. George Hildebrandt — went to Weir Park plus rec center j. Tom Brombacher — went to Weir Park k. Susan White — yoga class (Tuesday and Thursdays) i. Teacher molly was wonderful. l. Shelby Clark — Went to Weir Park, also went to Tai chi class m. Ann Crowley — took part in multiple events i. went to Judson Park ii. went to the rec center -- If you like to swim, the pool is quite empty. There’s a room upstairs with nice seating if you want to hang. n. Toby — lady bird Johnson field trip. Really small group with docent. APAC: Karen Kenny 1. AARP walkability toolkit to help make city and regions more walkable and healthier lifestyle. Anyone can do audits. a. There are educational walkability clinics that teach you how to be more of an advocate of walkability b. 2022 community challenge — submit for application to make city more walkable. (Susan White) c. Ann Crowley — Karen Kenny sent a 28-page book in the drive. i. We need data for the walkability and see what it is now. ii. George Hildebrandt and Teresa George interested in joining Ann C. 2. George Baker — would like more information on the “Adopt a Grandparent” program. a. Had a fuzzy interaction as what they are trying to do. b. Screening interview was done for Karen Kenny, but nothing has materialized. Karen Kenny is going to send the director a note regarding further communication with the program. 3. Home Vaccine program is up and running and available for West U 4. Toby — We are now in precinct 1. a. This limits some of our resources. b. Ann Crowley — we have had quite a lot of benefits compared to the other precincts, so we have not been able to get this turned around. c. WestU Mayor has been working to try to get this better for WestU d. But WestU is getting our own new bus and we can make our own trips. Good Neighbors Team: Mardi Turner 1. Mardi Turner — Valentine’s Day delivery was successful a. We had the heart hop with good turnout. b. Good neighbor team — we still have some handy men. i. Selby wants to join as handyman. ii. Tom Brombacher — wants to join to drive the truck. Parks & Rec: Susan White 1. Tennis committee dealing with issues related to tennis courts and coaches. a. People are bringing outside coaches. How do we deal with this issue? b. There are coaches that are vetted and hired by Parks. 2. Council needs more multigenerational events a. Need programming committee volunteers. b. Serving on March 24th Zoom committee Candyce Beneke, Ann Crowley, George Baker 3. Fee committee --May have to increase fees as pay of all employees has increased due to inflation and to keep up with other employers in the areas. a. Colonial Park is complimentary over 65 and rec center is complimentary over 75 4. Edloe pathway project a. Council has approved rubberized pathway along the way 5. Weir Park — working with a designer to improve the park. The park construction won’t happen until 2023 6. Judson — start to implement a pickle ball court there as well in the summer Senior Services Staff: Toby 1. Toby — new fire department program with UH to return drugs to keep them out of water system. a. They do not take needles or anything liquid. b. Pet meds are allowed. 2. Upcoming bunnies and bows event. 3. Mercer Arboretum — there was a trip with 4 no shows. 4. Master plan town hall meeting — April 5th (in senior center) and April 7th (city hall) 5. Summer newsletter is at the printer right now. Already working on fall one. 6. New bus approved in council with wheelchair lift a. Same size bus with slightly less seating due to wheelchair lift. City Council: Shannon 1. From the Precinct, Mayor Sample and board would like Rodney Ellis to come and make a presentation. 2. Recent council meeting —Edloe street pathway have that pathway from Tiney’s parking lot to north of sunset. There was discussion on stopping at north of the Sunset. Residents didn’t want the pathway to increase traffic. a. 4/1 on the council —pathway will be fully running on Sunset b. Pathway kid car —in street — prevents this. 3. Public works — discussion option 1 and 2. Underground detention? Or acquiring more land for detention? 4. City Center option 3 was unanimously voted for. a. New library and community will be built while current ones stay operational. b. Same goes for new fire stations 5. City council meetings on April 5th and 7th — please come as it will discuss the master plan in detail for residents. 6. Selby — anything about the water tower? a. Shannon responded that it was not a topic of discussion in the last few meetings. Adjournment: (3:10 pm) 1.
