HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSBM 2.10.22West University Place SENIORS BOARD MEETING February 10, 2022 Presiding: Ann Crowley (Chair) The meeting is called to order at 2:02 PM Roll Call: • Present: George Baker, Candyce Beneke, Ann Crowley, George Hilderbrandt, Teresa George-Hung, Shannon Carroll (Council Liaison), Toby Brooks, Diana Ayers, Susan Davis, Karen Kenny, Mardi Turner, Candace Tenbrink • Absent: Gloria Nino Monacelli, Selby Clark, Joan Johnson, Susan White, Tom Brombacher • Guests: Carlos De LaTorres and John Barnes Action Items: 1. Approve minutes from January 13th meeting a. Karen Kenny b. Candace Beneke 2. Mission statement: Group working on this include Candace Tenbrink, George Hilderbrandt, and Karen Kenny, and Candace Beneke. a. George Baker — likes the WUSS mission statement. But questions if the WUSS board mission statement is adequate or complete to the concerns of seniors b. Mardi — surveys and other things show our ability to figure out the concerns of seniors c. Ann Crowley — Implicit understanding that we the board will figure out the issues and concerns of the seniors. d. Voted on mission statement. i. George Hilderbrandt counted e. Version 2 with the extra words won on both voting items. 2. Vision — Candace Tenbrink — offered a vision statement for Toby and group as well. a. Vision is more aspirational versus mission is who we are. b. Vision — George Baker — engagement with what. c. All the stuff that Toby and parks and Rec offers. 3. How do we increase engagement? a. Diana Ayers— inclusion — as being a part of the whole. We need to make sure seniors are included in more community activities. b. Allan Elckowitz — more of an outlet to engage and know about things. c. Putting in the church bulletins. i. Toby — we can provide news letters to anyone who wants to take it to the church or doctor’s office. 1. Ayers — maybe get our info in the actual church bulletins ii. Carlos — to help the city become a place where people want to grow old. iii. John Barnes — an active partner on shaping city policies. iv. Shannon — thinks we’re on the right path. We would like to see the senior board to be more vocal, and regularly makes their thoughts known. d. In terms of goals of the board — in general. i. Make the city more Alzheimer’s friendly — Karen Kenny ii. Make a city senior choir —Karen Kenny — may have to wait another year. e. Ann — I would like every person on the board — either go over to the rec center, come to a class of some sort here or rec center, or attend another event, and go to a park. i. George had mentioned the a way to socialize on the app. f. On behalf of the team — thank you for bearing with us. 4. Ride share program — Ann presented this material. a. Supplemental Rideshare programs through Senior Rides and More. i. Organization reaches larger radiuses around the city and include ride share to neighboring cities such as Sugar Land. b. A lot of the communication goes through the church, and they get riders. APAC: Karen Kenny 1. Covid shots available. 2. Harris County Area on Agency now offers mobile dental provider, Enable Dental, that will provide dental services in home. If interested, please call HCAAA to be placed on the LONG list (2-year long). 3. Apply for AARP challenge grant. a. Public transportation to be friendly with canopy for metro. b. There is a lady who will help with the grant riding. 4. Adopt a grandparent — mentoring students of social work students. a. Homebound help, and mentorship. Students were surprised by how active seniors. If you would like to be part of this. b. Please give email — adopt a grandparent. It’s an inter generational dialogues. This helps for them get their degree. Good Neighbors Team: Mardi Turner 1. Mardi Turner — Valentine’s Day delivery. MCL girls made cupcakes out of socks and accompanied by cards. a. Called before and after cold snap b. Sunday Heart hop 2 pm. c. 17th presentation — driving under the influence of dementia d. 24th — city communications. Bianca. e. Starting on Friday —not really good neighbor but aarp for tax. How to sign up. Fridays 9/10/11 and 12 pm. Parks & Rec: Susan White (absent but presented by Toby) 1. Park lovers ball was successful Senior Services Staff: Toby 1. Toby mentioned lunch time yoga (12-1) Tuesdays and Thursdays. a. There have been positive reviews about this. Please come and check it out. 2. Two watercolor workshops 3. Scheduled — precinct trip for bees to Navasota (Bee Weaver) =— Feb 23rd. City Council: Shannon 1. Shannon — council meeting 2 kinds of hot topics — a. Edloe street pathway project. b. January 31st — facilities master plan. What do we see as best course? i. Location of fire departments, police, etc. and what is best for the 50 years. ii. Police chief would like secure parking for police officers. iii. Fire chiefs — heightened fire bays. c. Community center in the library d. Public works – scenario 3 is the favorite. i. What does WestU need. ii. Beneficial for them to move up to the Deacons property. e.
