SENIORS BOARD MEETING
October 14th 2021
Presiding: Ann Crowley (Chair)
The meeting is called to order at 2:05 PM
Roll Call:
• Present: George Baker, Candyce Beneke, Tom Brombacher, Selby Clark, Ann Crowley, Allan
Elkowitz, George Hilderbrandt, Teresa George-Hung, Joan Johnson, Gloria Nino Monacelli,
Candace TenBrink, Shannon Carroll (Council Liaison), Toby Brooks
• Absent: Diana Ayers, Susan Davis, Karen Kenny, Mardi Turner
• Guests: John Barnes (Former council liaison), Dorothy Zink, Carlos de La Torre, John
Montgomery
Welcome: John Montgomery, Mayor Pro-Temp
1. Thanked the board for participating
2. Looks forward to working with the board
3. The board will have a lot of support from the council

New Board Introduction:
1. New chair for the board is Ann Crowley
2. Candyce Beneke is the Vice Chair.
3. Introductions were made for all new and existing members, with members brining in a wide
variety of experiences and backgrounds for positive future outcomes.
4. Shannon Carroll will be the new board liaison for the council.
a. Report heavy need action items done
b. looks forward to open communication with the board.
5. Mardi Turner Will be representing the Good Neighbor Team (GNT). She was absent today but
will be here for future meetings.
6. Karen Kenny will be representing APAC for future meetings. She was also absent but will be
present for future meetings. The APAC Minutes have been sent via email.
Actions Items:
1. Approved previous minutes – 1) Candyce Seconded by George Hilderbrandt
2. Teresa George Hung voted and approved to be the new secretary -- 1) Candace Seconded by
Candyce
General Information:
1. GNT -- there are about 145 seniors in WestU. The GNT visits and checks in on these seniors as
well as providing them with home gifts especially during the holidays.
a. Many seniors have lost a spouse, have a debilitating condition, or are Referred by the
police or fire department.
b. Information about these seniors is often gathered by word of mouth or tax rolls.
2. Thanksgiving Cards will be signed at next meeting
Parks and Recreation: Susan White (out today)
1. October is a very busy month for parks and rec
2. There will be movies at colonial park on Fridays at 7:00 PM
3. Upcoming events include fathers and flashlights, the full moon festival, and the fun run.
4. Judson Park has some initiatives including new turf, possible pickleball lines.
5. Poor farm ditch improvements will have oleanders replaced. Ditch is county property. An
architectural firm will be involved.
Council Meeting Report: Shannon Carrol
1. September 9th and September 13th council meetings did not occur. The latter did not occur due
to flooding
2. September 20th council met
a. Proclaimed John neighbors day
b. Public hearing for the 2022 budget
c. Fire Chief Aaron Taylor updated council on hurricane damage
i. No major damage. There were minor damages such as broken tree limbs.
3. September 27th – council discussed and Trisports issues
a. Wanted accountability for $125,000. New number is $100,000
b. Must submit receipts.
c. Trisports maintains the WestU softball, soccer, and little league fields.
i. They received money for keeping fields
ii. Provide proposed MOU in August.
4. Reception for board members and adopted 2022 budget.
5. October 11th, 2021, council meeting focused on:
a. Wastewater reuse in WestU
b. Chevron/Houston Marathon is occurring in January
c. Friday Oct. 22nd is the Full Moon Festival
d. Covid 19th updated was given by fire chief Aaron Taylor.
i. Very few deaths in WestU (0-5) from COVID
ii. This may be the last report
Senior Services Staff and Other Information:
1. Toby and Patricia
a. Short staffed but hope to focus more on communication
b. Volunteer involvement encouraged
c. Board supports the senior services staff.
d. Toby mentioned the Texas A&M Survey on Community Needs
Focus for Next Meeting in November:
1. We should focus on SMART (Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timebound) objectives –
this was mentioned by George Hilderbrandt
2. Joan – Is the name Senior Services a problem that could be impeding other seniors from joining?
a. Chair is open to recommendation that could be presented to the council for a possible
name change.
3. Candace Tenbrink – Propose to start with us not last. Council stuff to come after Board matters.
4. Proposals for ideas to help with the senior services especially for:
a. Bringing in more seniors
b. Getting seniors more involved.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Selby Clark made the motion to adjourn the meeting
and Tom Brombacher seconded it.
