Barnes, Councilmember Thelma Gilliam, City Secretary Lauri Lankford, Councilmember Ed Sobash, Councilmember CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES Actas de la reunión especial del Concejo Municipal The City Council of the City of West University Place, Texas, met in a virtual special meeting on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, for the purpose of considering the agenda of items listed. El Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de West University Place, Texas, se reunió en una reunión especial el miércoles 12 de mayo de 2021 con el propósito de considerar el orden del día de los puntos enumerados. Agenda was as follows: 1. Call Special Meeting to Order/Roll Call Councilmembers Barnes called the special meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Councilmembers Lankford and Sobash were also in attendance. Mayor Higley and Mayor Pro Tem Trautner were absent. City Manager Beach, City Secretary Thelma Gilliam, City Attorney Bounds, and Assistant to the City Manager Will Thompson were also present. 2. Resolution Canvassing the Results of the May 1, 2021 General Election Matters related to a resolution canvassing the results of the May 1, 2021 Election on the first and final reading. Recommended Action: Approve Resolution. Ms. Thelma Gilliam, City Secretary Resolución sobre los resultados de las elecciones generales del 1 de mayo de 2021 Asuntos relacionados con una resolución que sondea los resultados de las elecciones del 1 de mayo de 2021 en la primera y última lectura. Thelma Gilliam, Secretaria de la Ciudad Councilmember Sobash moved to approve the resolution canvassing the results of the May 1, 2021 General and Special Elections on first and final reading. Councilmember Lankford seconded the motion. MOTION PASSED. Ayes: Barnes, Sobash, Lankford Noes: None Absent: Higley, Trautner City Council Meeting Minutes, May 12, 2021 2 of 2 Sí: Barnes, Sobash, Lankford Noes: Ninguno Ausente: Higley, Trautner Before adjourning the meeting, Councilmember Lankford wanted to say for the record that she understands that the voting rules are changing, but she recommends in the future if candidates send out mailers to people to request a mail-in ballot, the candidates and the City need to give more of a notice that people need to track their mail-in ballots. She said she thinks many people did not understand they could track their ballot, because by chance she discovered one voter’s mail-in ballot was either lost or did not arrive in time. She said had she not discovered that by the early listings Council received daily during the early voting period, the voter would not have known that he needed to go and vote in person. Councilmember Lankford said with thefts at the post office boxes close to west U and with the uncertainty of the mail, she thinks it is essential that people know they need to track their ballot to see if they need to go vote in person and she does not think that the message got out to people. 3. Adjourn With no other business before the Council, Councilmember Sobash moved to adjourn the meeting at approximately 4:06 p.m. Councilmember Lankford seconded the motion. MOTION PASSED.
