HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSBM 1.14.21 2021Page 1 of 2 West University Place SENIORS BOARD MEETING January 14, 2021 Presiding: Selby Clark The virtual meeting called to order at 2 :04 p.m. Roll call: Present : Judy Faulkner , George Hilderbrandt, Joan Johnson, Carlos De La Torre, Ka ren Kenny, Selby Clark (chair), Carol O’Neill, Tom Brombacher, C andace TenB rink, Candyce Beneke, Susan Davis , Ann Crowley, Toby Brooks and Susan White , John Barnes (Council Liaison) Mardi Turner (GNT). Absent : Stan McCandless, George Baker, Elizabeth Wilder , Guests : Kevin Trautner (City Council) Minutes: December minutes approved by Candace TenBrink, seconded by Karen Kenny. 1. Citizen Comments : None. Council M eeting R eport: John Barnes 2. Covid -19: 21% Positive Statewide. Locally 400+ week. Spike in cases: 39 cases before Christmas, 120 n ew a ctive. 3. Buffalo Speedway -Always two lanes both ways. Buffalo Bridge closed at this time. 4. Workshop: 56 Pole locations -existing poles + new. P arks and Recreation: Susan White 1. Parks : Rollback did not affect fitness classes . Still at 50% for social spacing. 2. Colonial Park Ea st: New features, equipment, paint and solar lights . Friends of West U Parks, received $50,000 sponsor donation. 3. Survey: Dr. Walker prelim results by next meeting, February 11, 2021 4. Huffington Park Project : More open green space. Arbor will be removed to create better sight lines. 5. S.P.I.R.I.T. Core Values, and Christmas Light Show links will be sent. APAC Report : Karen Kenn y APAC M inutes sent via email. 1. Covid -19 Update: V acc ine supply and demand: March looks promising per The Houston Health Department. 2. I f interested in becoming a Texas Silver -Haired Legislator, please remit application to The Harris County Area on Aging. Good Neighbor Team: Mardi Turner 1. Valentine’s Day Cards addressed, signed, and will be mailed at the beginning of February. A message from the Good Neighbor Team will include a Holiday trash schedule, E -Waste and Mattress Collection dates and Bulk Trash Ser vice. Senior Services report: Toby Brooks 1 Mardi mentioned Elvis Birthday Cupcake Giveaway, Hat Day Contest, upcoming Ed Heathcott event. Encouraged members to sign up. 2 Upcoming: NCL Post Oak will be sponsoring Tea Month (February) NCL Heart of Texas prepa ring heart shaped fleece pillows for delivery in February. 3 Dorothy Zink has inquired of Selby Clark, (Comfort Keepers) regarding suggestions about administering vaccines to homebound residents. Requires nurse or pharmacist. No Senior Board Meeting, Minutes of March 12, 2020 Page 2 of 2 homebound suggestion as of y et. John Barnes will inquire to Aaron T aylor regarding in home services. 4 New: Virtual Passport Program by appointment only, one person at a time. Idea behind this program is to stimulate those who have had little contact during the pandemic. Encouraged Senior Board to experience the VR machine to pass along the information of this Pilot Pr ogram that includes virtual hang -gliding, swimming with dolphins, the Milky Way etc. Judy Faulkner participated and lent her positive experience.
