Barnes, Councilmember Thelma Gilliam, City Secretary Lauri Lankford, Councilmember Ed Sobash, Councilmember CITY COUNCIL ACTION MINUTES The City Council of the City of West University Place, Texas, met in a workshop on Monday, October 14, 2019, in the Municipal Building, 3800 University, West University Place. 1. Call to Order Mayor Higley called the workshop to order at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building Bill Watson Conference Room. Council and Staff in attendance were: Mayor Pro Tem Trautner, Councilmembers Barnes, Lankford and Sobash, City Manager Beach, City Secretary Gilliam, City Attorney Petrov, and Interim Public Works Director Barrera Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey was also present. 2. Bees Matters related to urban beekeeping, including a brief presentation followed by a question and answer session with Council. Recommended Action: Discuss and provide staff with desired direction. Mr. Gerardo Barrera, Interim Public Works Director and Ms. Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey Tara Chapman with Two Hives Honey in Austin, Texas, gave a presentation to Council, which included reviewing some of the requirements/restrictions outlined in the City of Austin’s ordinance. Ms. Chapman stated that Council basically has three options: 1. Outlaw bees all together; 2. Legalize beekeeping, with restrictions; or 3. Do nothing Ms. Chapman recommended Option 2 and suggested that the City consult with her or another bee expert when drafting an ordinance if it decided to go that route. During and following Ms. Chapman’s presentation, there were questions and answers by Council. Adjourn City Council Meeting Action Minutes, October 14, 2019 2 of 2 With no other business before the Council, Councilmember Barnes moved to adjourn the meeting at approximately 7:15 p.m. Councilmember Sobash seconded the motion.
