HomeMy WebLinkAboutWUSSB11.9.17pdfWest University Senior Service Board Minutes November 9, 2017 Presiding: Anne Crowley presided and called the meeting to order at 2:05 pm Present: George Baker, Sarah Ballanfant, Anne Crowley, Susan Davis, Rebecca Dosier, John Palmer, Stan McCandless Tom Brombacher, Virginia Lootens Absent: Joan Johnson, Judy Faulkner, Selby Clark, Ruth Becker, Candyce Beneke and Carlos De La Torre Staff: Toby Brooks, Susan White Council Liaison: Kellye Burke was not present Minutes: John Palmer moved to approve the minutes of October 12, as presented. George Baker, however, wanted the minutes amended to reflect his comments in regard to documentation of Ms Drewes comments. A brief conversation was had, and Rebecca moved to approve them as amended and Sarah seconded. The motion carried and the minutes were approved, with changes suggested.Citizen Comments: Ms. Drewes was not present but asked Susan White to make a change in the minutes. She did not want the blankets, the seniors deserved the blankets. This was not in writing as requested.Council Meeting Report: Kellye Burke was not present Parks and Recreation Report: Susan White reported that October was a busy month with several special events: Movies in the Park, Fall Moon Fest, Fathers and Flashlights (grossed over $120,000), proceeds help with the parks, Halloween Dash Fun Run also netted over $21,000 which some proceeds will go towards ballistic helmets for the fire department. Software migration is set to begin next week, Parks Board had their second meeting and will soon have the subcommittees meet, one being the fees which Anne Crowley will be the senior representative.APAC Report: Virginia Lootens reported that Chairman Foley discussed open enrollment period from October 15 through December 30, for those that lost durable equipment during the storm, which is highly susceptible for fraud. Deborah Moore reflected how very proud she is of the many Houstonians that came together during Harvey, including her staff working 24/7. Marilyn Vargiu retired from the Jewish Community Center after 30 years. Managing Local Ombudsman Carmen Castro was honored in Washington DC for representing the city at the Health and Aging policy program. Steve Coycault a Silver Haired Legislature, won $24,000 for the Texas Plus Champions Competition and will be donating it to the Harris County Area Agency on Aging. Meals for the Elderly HOME project is scheduled for November 23 and still
looking for volunteers. She also mentioned the Guest Speaker from Houston Hospice. Presentation was scanned in and emailed to the board.Good Neighbor Team: Toby Brooks reported that the next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16 at 1 pm. A guest speaker from Neighbor Inc. will be doing a presentation on Senior Safety Check. At their last meeting they met at a volunteer’s home to have a home safety presentation done by Occupation Therapist.Activities and Previews: Toby Brooks reported the Men’s Club went to George Bush Library with 13 people. Open to the general public but primarily men. Monster Mash had 75 in attendance. Many dressed in costume. Rotary Pancake Breakfast had roughly 50 in attendance. Judy did an excellent job in arranging it. Volunteer Luncheon is scheduled for next week. The first overnight camping trip is scheduled with 8 ladies to Wilderness Lake Park, one of Houston’s parks. Tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for December 4 at 5:30 in front of Community Building.Jennie Hughes Park Update: Susan White reported at the October 23 council meeting two new proposals were presented to them. First was to bring the porch and fence line back 2 feet. It originally had no porch. Council voted on the first one. Susan is awaiting the proposals from the architects. Quotes for the demolition process has begun and will begin any day,Previous Business: None New Business: George proposed that the board approach Councilman Higley to discuss the senior exemption again. It was recommended since Kellye Burke is the liaison that we talk with her instead and ask her to speak on the status of raising the exemption again.Adjournment: Anne Crowley moved to adjourn.
