HomeMy WebLinkAboutWUSSB10.12.17updatedWest University Senior Services Board Minutes October 12, 2017 Presiding: Candyce Beneke called the meeting to order at 2:08 Present: Selby Clark, Candyce Beneke, Ruth Becker, Ann Crowley, Stan McCandless, Judy Faulkner, Rebecca Dozier, George Baker, Carlos DeLaTorre, Sarah Ballanfant, John Palmer, Susan Davis, Virginia Lootens Absent: No one was absent Staff: Susan White and Toby Brooks Minutes: The September minutes were approved; Judy Faulkner motioned to approve the minutes; seconded by Rebecca Council Liaison: no one has been appointed Guests: Joan Johnson and Tom Brombache (potential new Board members), Dick Yehle Citizen Comments: Ms. Drewes commented on the report of her September statement. She expressed her concerns about the senior exemption, no blankets were distributed, no board member represented seniors about the budget at the City Council meeting. To ensure accurate representation of guest comments, a motion was made by Virginia Lootens that all guests submit their comments in a written bulleted format prior to being given an opportunity to speak. Sarah Ballanfant seconded and John Palmer also seconded. George Baker requested citizen comments be listed and then what the follow-up action was taken by the board if needed.Council Meeting Report: no report Parks and Recreation Report: Susan passed out a thorough report regarding all PARD activities, JEH Park, and upcoming events. Ann Crowley will represent the Senior Board at future PARD meetings. The senior board will discuss concerns or requests for information with Ann who will then represent the senior board at future PARD meetings. There was additional conversation regarding the flow of information. Stan Candless inquired about cost differentiation for recreation center member fees between seniors and other residents. He also asked about the task force for the Jennie Elizabeth Hughes park. Susan explained the Council has the final plans and some areas are being re-visited.APAC : Virginia Lootens distributed her notes from the October 5th APAC meeting as well as a Volunteer Information Sheet for those interested in a volunteer opportunity to help with the Houston Meals for the Elderly Project on November 23, 2017.Good Neighbor Team: Toby reported on the activities which included a visit from a police officer who spoke about current scams. On Thursday, October 19, there will be a home assessment of Marleen Rubens home to help understand how to have a safe home. The group is also working on Thanksgiving Day cards.Activities and Previews: many events and activities were cancelled due to Harvey. On 10/11 a group went to Waco to visit a mammoth search/excavation at a site managed by Baylor and the City of Waco. The Fall Festival of Arts and Big Band at Bellaire Methodist will be held October 14 and is free. Old Business : there was no old business New Business: Stan asked about the National Charity League and Toby explained it Is a group of mother’s and their daughter’s who have a goal to reach out to the community with philanthropic projects they created together. Adjournment: Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by John and seconded by Susan.Re-Open Meeting: Candyce motioned to re-convene the meeting. Rebecca seconded. The meeting was re-opened to call a vote on new members, Tom Brombacher and Joan Johnson, to be approved for serving on the Senior Board. Candyce motioned for new members to be approved and Virginia seconded. The vote to accept the two new members was unanimous.Re-adjournment: Ann motioned to adjourn the meeting and Sarah seconded.
