HomeMy WebLinkAboutWUSSB 5.11.17pdfWest University Senior Service Board Minutes May 11, 2017 Roll Call: Selby Clark presided and called the meeting to order at 2:03 pm Present: Selby Clark, Ruth Becker, Ann Crowley, George Baker, Sarah Ballanfantr, John Palmer, Rebecca Dozier, Susan Davis, Virginia Lootens, Burt Ballanfant (council), Susan White (Parks and Rec)Absent: Judy Faulkner, Carlos DeLaTorre, Becky Arnold, Candyce Beneke, Stan McCandless, Staff: Toby Brooks Council Liaison: Burt Ballanfant Others Present: None Minutes: Motion to approve minutes was made by Ann and seconded by John. Minutes were approved.Council Meeting Report: Burt reported on change in council personnel as of May 31 when new council will be in place. John and the Board said thank you to Burt for his service to the community and to the senior board.Parks and Recreation Report: Susan reported on the Classical concert series last performance which was the best attended with approx. 150 people enjoying the concert. Susan expressed thanks to Council Member Turner for the introductions. Colonial Park Pool opened for members on April 29 and 30. The attendance was fairly low compared to this time last year due to the cooler temperatures. JEH Park - 80 comments were submitted from residents which were shared with the Task Force for review. The architect will refine the plans and prepare a rough draft plan for the Task Force to briefly review two ensure consensus on design.The Parks and Rec Board has formed a fee subcommittee with a Senior Board Liaison with the goal top have the fee recommendations to Council in preparation for the 2018 budget requests. Ann Crowley will serve as the liaison.Liberty Hill Park - A brief project presentation was held at the April 10 Council meeting and Council member Turner recognized the Friends’ contribution and completion of project.Tennis Committee - Draft policies are almost finalized, with a new feature of online reservations. Staff is working with the software provider to finalize the setup. Committee members will test the system for 30 days to ensure it is functioning before proposed changes are sent to tennis committee members.APAC Report: Virginia reported on May 4 meeting on “Livable Communities” which are age friendly communities. She discussed the Bridges Conference held at Crowne Plaza where they discussed and surveyed what makes a livable community. They also explored what other organizations would be involved such as AARP. An example is Chestnut Hill in Boston. Key steps discussed were obtaining a baseline assessment, a 3 year plan to identify people who can help implement and would include respite and veterans care. Toby will scan and send fliers that were distributed by Ann.Good Neighbor Team: Toby reported on last month meeting to review deliveries and potential changes. Ideas include deliveries of water, snacks, wrist band for keys, toothpaste, flags, night lights, Direct Link application, a safety check program. Toby will
attend a meeting on October 30 at 2:00 to discuss program. She announced they need volunteers to match people with similar likes and dislikes and create a check in system from 8-5 weekdays. Selby described a computer system which will automatically call to check on folks who sign up for the service. There is a list of follow-up calls until calling police if no response. This is similar to the San Diego “You are not alone” program. There are three facilities in Houston. Shelby and John requested the Board invite a representative to present on this program.Toby will send Senior Resource Network Guide to board members and post on senior web-page.Activity Report: Toby reported on * Variety Show on Friday night with 40 in attendance *.Double decker bus trip tour with 20 enjoying the upper level view and guide * Redneck Country Club visit with 14 on bus tour * May 12 Older Americans Month Carnival at JCC * Fall newsletter is currently in production Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park Update: Committee plans to continue discussion on which plan to choose. There was general agreement to consider walkway and chalkboard or visually clear oval pathway. The 3 foot slope of the lot is a challenge but this slope eliminates any ball play. The family likes the hill idea to discourage noisy activities. The committee wants closure as do the architects. Susan White will organize a meeting to revisit ideas with 20 member task force. The architect team will draw up plans and present to Task Force.Old Business: Decision on fees is postponed New Business: No board meetings in June, July, and August. Toby will send out interest questionnaire as mandated by the state to all board members to reapply for board position.Citizen Comments: none Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 3:02.
