HomeMy WebLinkAboutWUSSB 02.09.17West University Senior Service Board Minutes February 9, 2017 Roll Call: Selby Clark presided and called the meeting to order at 2:03 pm Present: Selby Clark, Candyce Beneke, Ruth Becker, Stan McCandless, Judy Faulkner, Carlos DeLaTorre, Sarah Ballanfant, Rebecca Dozier, Virginia Lootens, Ann Crowley Absent: George Baker, Becky Arnold, John Palmer, Susan Davis Staff: Toby Brooks, Susan White Council Liaison: Burt Ballanfant Others Present : Dick Yehle, Alida Drewes A quorum was present.Minutes: Candyce Beneke moved to approve the January 12, 2017 minutes and Stan McCandless seconded. The motion carried and the minutes were approved.Council Meeting Report: Burt Ballanfant reported no new information but did describe the success of the Houston Marathon and breakfast. He also explained that the minutes of the city council are available in both written and audio format on the city secretary’s website.Parks and Rec Report: Susan reported on the sign at Liberty Hill which is waiting for an engineer report. The sculpture was removed from the landscape and the new project recap presented to the City Council on March 27. The tennis committee met and plans to be finalized and presented to the City Council for approval.Big Belly recycling and trash barrels will be installed at Weir Park for a trial period. No tax dollars were spent as the bins were purchased with proceeds for the Fun Run. These bins are solar powered and compacts the waste so it will be emptied once a week as opposed to the current schedule of every day. These bins are leased and the next possible location is Colonial Park.Jennie Hughes Park: currently waiting for attorneys to meet and define “quiet space”. Selby reported the architect is working on a design proposal for a quiet park. Stan asked about intergenerational vegetable garden which Selby explained faced some resistance. Currently under consideration is a gazebo, a table for 6, and a sandbox. The West U. Garden Club offered to work with city landscape architect.APAC: Virginia Lootens explained the last meeting was postponed and next meeting is scheduled for the week of February 13. Good Neighbor Team: Toby reported that the soup social had 45 attendees and 20 volunteers. There will be a meeting next Thursday and a panel will interview some of the recipients of the Good Neighbor Team for ways they can improve services.Activities and Previews: Toby reported on the following:1. Offering of an overnight field trip to the Grand Canyon in September. There was a presentation from the company offering to organize the trip 2. The chili meal had 75 in attendance 3. The Zumba class meets on Mondays 4. The Body Pump class meets Mondays and Fridays 5. There was a field trip to the art class at Bonnie Blue’s house Old Business: An article about PERS will be coming soon. Ann Crowley will add information to emails and social media site. It was explained that SWIFT 911 application needs to be downloaded and form completed. This system will replace CODE RED as of March 1 and the information will not transfer so anyone interested needs to complete and submit the new form. There is a link on the West U City website. It is a free service which can send an emergency message 4 different ways. The information form, which Toby passed out, can be filled out by hand, given to Toby, and she will submit information for anyone interested.New Business: Carlos passed out 3 questions for interviewing city council candidates and Stan suggested sending them to the candidates and inviting them to attend a Senior Board meeting. Ann requested the board share the answers with the community at large. Selby asked if there were other any questions and suggested the board respond to the questions as well as to the candidates responses. February 17 is the filing date for all candidates. Selby asked for a vote and Stan seconded the motion that Carlos distribute the questions to all the candidates and invite them to the board’s March 9 meeting. If a candidate is unable to attend they can submit their responses for board review. Following a discussion concerning the loud volume of landscapers machines, Burt suggested 3 board members attend the next council meeting to address the leaf blower sound level problem. Stan will investigate current rules and regulations and report at next board meeting.Guest: Mr. Dick Healy announced he has filed for candidacy for City Council and thanked the board for the questions and expressed the need to define city’s view of senior welfare and activities.Citizen Comments: Selby responded to Ms. Drewes complaint by explaining he is in control of board and not Toby. Ms Drewes requested that the board track the voting record of city council members regarding issues relevant to senior citizens. It was also noted that there currently is no City support for people that are hard of hearing.Adjournment: Rebecca Dozier motioned the meeting be adjourned and it was seconded by Judy Faulkner at 3:03.
