Since you are thinking about the topic, I want to suggest you consider another aspect of fences, i.e. if there should be unique standards for those that may be erected on the (street) side yards of corner lots. I suggest the issue should be considered, as there seems to be an increasing trend toward high, opaque fences being installed along on the side street line' (sometimes known as the "side property line"), which on 50-foot lots places them about 12 feet from the curb and as close as 5 feet to the house. I suggest that optically such fences are little different than the exterior wall of a house and some regulation may be in order to restrict their presence. The house under the construction on the northeast corner of Vanderbilt and Pittsburg is an example that makes me think that either the house should be allowed to be built along the side street line or the City Code governing fences should be modified for corner lots to reduce the size and opaqueness of side yard fences. The first option is not realistic, which makes me believe the second alternative should be considered. In thinking about the matter, it occurs to me that fence styles used to be either short chain link or vvuudt n picket, or taller wrought iron. In all cases, they used to present a modest physical barrier that only minimally interrupted the sense of light and air but did not present an imposing optical barrier. Today's tall wooden and masonry fences present an entirely different appr, arance that is hardly different than the wall of a house, a w-II that is precluded in that location by the Zoning Ordinance. Please add the issue of street side yard fences on corner lots to your fence study. As an aside, you might contemplate if tall hedges are effectively fences and should be included in your study.
