Parking Across Sidewalk Policy
March 22, 2004
Effective immediately, the City will recognize vehicles parked in driveways,
where the distance from the garage and the sidewalk is less than the length
of a car, as LEGALLY parked, even though the vehicle may be blocking a
sidewalk. It is felt that, in these circumstances, the individual is following the
law and they would otherwise have to park on the street, which would conflict,
with traffic.
This exception will not apply where there is adequate room in a driveway
between the sidewalk and a building or structure, such as a garage. In this
• instance, there is an alternative to parking in such a manner as to block all or
part of the sidewalk, that is, pull one's car far enough up in the driveway so as
not to obstruct the sidewalk.
•
Additionally, the City intends to seek modifications to the building codes that
will correct this situation in future new home construction. The City will also
look for opportunities to reroute sidewalk's closer to the street to help these
situations when feasible.
Sincerely,
Gty or West University Place
