HomeMy WebLinkAbout09072006 BSC Agenda Item 2 I Pepco Sales Su to A 41960 W Houston,TX 77095 August 22, 2006 Debbie Scarcella Chief Building Official West University Place, TX 77005-2830 Dear Debbie, Several of my plumbers, builders, and wholesalers would like me to introduce "XPA Plumb Better" to the city of West University. XPA is an alternative to copper tube for plumbing houses. This product has been around for many years and is currently being used in the Austin and San Antonio markets. XPA offers a number of advantages to the installer. The pipe is color coded for easy identification of hot and cold runs. The pipe can be easily uncoiled and shaped by hand to create 45% or 90% bends reducing the need for fittings and allowing for longer runs. This reduces water turbulence and potential leaks providing for a better flow rate. XPA, also referred to as Pex-AL-Pex, is approved by the international plumbing code. The code for West University: 3. Add at the beginning of Section 303.1: "Even if permitted by this code (IPC), none of the following is allowed for use in the City: Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe or fittings, polyethylene pipe or fittings, Type M copper, lead-based pipe, aluminum DWV pipe or components, or air admittance valves." Does not specifically address XPA, which is a composite pipe, constructed of an outer jacket of polyethylene, a middle layer of aluminum, and an additional layer of polyethylene on the inner wall. I would like the opportunity to discuss this product with you and the West University Board. The goal of this meeting would be for local code approval on the XPA product.
