Gentlemen:
JMH Supermarket located at 3636 Rice Blvd. is undergoing an extensive remodel. Included in
this remodel is an extensive modification to the electrical system in the structure.
Due to changes made in the electrical requirements made during the construction, it is necessary
to increase the size of the electrical service to the supermarket to serve the added load.
We are applying for a variance to the City of West University city ordinance that requires a single
electrical main for a defined building within the jurisdiction of the city. Reasons and justification
for the application are below.
The original plans were approved without a single main because the known electrical
requirements of the supermarket at that time did not necessitate modifying the service size.
Therefore the service was not modified and was left as is. Insertion of a single 800 amp main
into the line feed to the supermarket would be a very expensive modification. Additionally, due to
the prior work already performed, there is no simple solution to locate an 800-amp main
disconnect. The device is quite large.
The requested modification will actually reduce the number of mains on the supermarket and will
be in complete compliance with Article 230.71(A) of the National Electrical Code. (See
attachment) This type of service is completely safe within the technological capabilities of
modern electrical equipment. Each of the mains are outside the building in one location and will
be clearly and permanently marked as mains for the supermarket and will facilitate easily
disconnecting all of the electrical power to the supermarket in a very short period of time in the
event of an emergency requiring such action.
