HomeMy WebLinkAbout10182007 BSC Agenda Item 1 • TREE PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION REGULATIONS The Building and Standards Commission has been meeting since February 2007 in discussions concerning the provisions of Chapter 82 of the Code of Ordinances entitled"Urban Forest and Enhancement". Staff approached the BSC to consider working on the provisions in order to correct and simplify the regulations. One of City Council's long-term goals has been to review and revise the permitting process. One of the steps in the permitting process is the evaluation of development sites for compliance with tree preservation and protection requirements, removal of trees and replacement plantings. The BSC had some input from the general public through meetings earlier in the year. Citizen concerns over the loss of large or"heritage" trees, relative size of replacement plantings and their locations, and the inflexibilities in permitting a property owner to remove trees prompted the BSC to explore new avenues and options that are in some instances, very different from the current regulations. Attached is a chart highlighting the major differences between the current provisions and the proposed changes. The subsequent attachments are proposed changes to the existing ordinance.
