HomeMy WebLinkAboutWUSSB 06-12-2014West University Senior Services Board Meeting June 12, 2014 Present: Pieter Vrancken (Chair), Stan McCandless, Philip Bryant, Sarah Ballanfant, Candyce Beneke, Janet Vrancken, Selby Clark. Absent: George Baker, Michelle Moore, Becky Arnold, John Palmer, Mary Ryerson, Joe Mitchell, Virginia Lootens . Staff: Toby Brooks. Guest: Councilwoman Joan Johnson. The Meeting was called to order at 2:10PM. There being no quorum the minutes of this meeting are unofficial. The Minutes of the meeting of May 8 were accept ed as presented. Activities (Toby Brooks): The Waco Heritage/Craft Agrarian Precinct trip attracted 22 participants. The Gun safety class presented by retired HPD Officer Debbie Lokey was very well attended as was the Pajama Jam Theme meal. Lynn Old has vo lunteered for the Theme meals the next of which will be the Red White & Blue theme meal. The Blackberry -picking trip was cancelled. The Newsletter is being prepared. A class to teach how to crochet necklaces is planned as is a craft fair in the fall. There were not enough people for the croquet. The opera class (Fridays 9:30 -11:00AM) will resume in September. A class in Folk music is planned for the fall. A Support group has drawn 8 participants. This group discusses depression, bi -polar disease, schizophre nia – not necessarily for sufferers but also for carers. APAC – No presentation Council (Joan Johnson); At the June 9 Council Meeting goals were reviewed and two were given top priority: a) completion of the Parks Master Plan (survey is complete; next step is a one or more town hall meetings or Focus groups); b) update Commercial Zones for the City. Other goals are ongoing. Council approved funding to complete Poor Farm Ditch Outfall Renovation in the amount of $156,935. Council approved the City of West Un iversity Place Investment policy with no changes. Council approved the 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report which had received a clean audit from Certified Public Accountants Bell, Harris, Pecachek L.L.L.P. Good Neighbor Team (Toby Brooks for Michell e Moore): The next meeting will take place at 9:00AM on Thursday 19 th June to prepare the goody bags for the 4 th July distribution. HEB has provided a hurricane package for inclusion. PARD (Toby Brooks) A Bike Parade is scheduled at 9:30AM on July 4 th at C olonial Park. There will be concerts on Friday evenings at 7PM for the next three weeks. On Father’s Day (June 15 th ) the Houston Concert Band will perform at 2PM. Previous Business (Toby Brooks) Michael Little from the Honor Program at U of H is considerin g factors for the suggested name change. He is looking at Hi Neighbor to be aware of the scope of our activities. New Business (Pieter Vrancken) Council has requested a presentation on the activities of the Senior Services Board to be given at 5:30PM on Ju ly 14. Board members will receive a draft for their comments and/or changes by e -mail. The Meeting adjourned at 2:55PM.
