Call to Order: The mee ting was called to order at 6:3 4 pm by the chair , Melissa Pifko . II. Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve by Don Armstrong and seconded by Susan Reeves. Vote to accept as written was unanimous. III. Friends Overview: Amanda McGee unable to attend. Tim O’Connor gave a brief update on the Friends Awards Luncheon hosted by the Allusion Apartments earlier in the day. City Council presented Star Citizen Awards to the 2014 Park Lovers Ball Co -Chairs. Event was very well attended. Wayne Franklin suggested that Friends consider having two r eserved pool deck loungers w/table as an PLB Auction Item for 2015 – group fully supported the idea. IV. Board Member Updates: 1) Colonial Park: Recommendation was made to install an additional trash receptacle at the northwest corner of the playground area . 2) Colonial Park Pool: Recommendation was made to consider shade structures along the west side of the pool deck to cover the lounge chairs and tables. The group felt that rental cabanas would be popular and an excellent source of revenue for the pool. Sta ff will investigate the cost and possible locations for cabanas. It was reported that the Public Address System at the pool needs to be upgraded so that patrons are able to clearly hear any announcements. 3) Reported that all other parks appeared to be in ex cellent condition. Wayne thanked the Parks Division for their expedient and effective handling of his request to raise the tree canopies around the Little League fields on the WUE campus. 4) Wayne reported that Jeff LePow, owner/operator of the Firehouse Sub s franchise in West University Place, was very interested in becoming an event sponsor for one or more of the special events that the city produces. V. Staff and City Council Updates: 1) Councilmember ’s Yehle and Johnson commented positively on the Friends A wards Luncheon and publicly thanked Friends for all they do for the WUP Parks and Recreation Department . 2) Tim reported that Dr. Walker with the Texas A&M Extension Service and Jim Patterson with White Oak Studio would be presenting the Citizen Survey results at a public meeting on Monday, May 12 th and encouraged all interested to attend. Burt requested the survey results be sent again to the full board, because he had not received them.
Parks and Recreation Board Minutes page 2 VI. Citizen’s Comments: Citizen , Ramsay Elder, in attendance had no comments. VII New Business: 1. In light of Jon’s current situation, the group decided to send a get well card and a restaurant gift card to Alexis Trevelise. Staff will design the card and notify the full board when it is read y for signature/personal notes. Cards will be mailed to Jon’s Galveston home on May 16 th . 2. Group decided that the Parks Board would conduct their June meeting and at that time determine if there would be a need for July and August meetings . VIII . Adjournment: Motion to adjourn made by Tracy Larson and seconded by Don Armstrong . Meeting adjourned at 7:39pm . The next meeting will be scheduled for June 4 , 201 4 @ 6:3 0 pm .
