A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE METRO REIMAGINING PLANNED ROUTE
THROUGH THE CITY DE WEST UNIVERSITY PLACE VIA WESLAYAN STREET
WHEREAS, the City Of Wert University Place (West U( lies within the Greater Houston
Metropolitan Statistical Area;
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Halls County (Metro) is charged with
providing public transportation within this region;
WHEREAS, West U applauds the efforts of Metro in their Reimagining program to provide a
more effective transportation solution To the region in cost efficient manner;
WHEREAS, as part Of the Reimagining program Metro has proposed bus Route 48 along
Weslayan through West U;
WHEREAS, through West U Weslayan is limited to a two lane 30 fact paved surface and is not
designed to accommodate the proposed multi -modal transportation;
WHEREAS, Wesleyan does not possess dedicated turn lanes save and except limited lanes at its
intersections with Bissonnet and Bellaire Boulevard
WHEREAS, Wesleyan is a regional thoroughfare with daily top counts exceeding 20,000 per
Metro's traffic consultant;
WHEREAS, any vehicular movement around a stationary vehicle would require a movement
into an oncoming and Opposing lane Of traffic;
WHEREAS, this area contains two sate school crossings for West University Elementary and
Pershing Middle School children;
WHEREAS, bus traffic during these school travel times would be at approximately 15 minute
intervals and create traffic backups behind buses that Would not allow adequate spacing to facilitate the
safe crossing of Weslayan by School children and their families also limiting motorisb' visibility in
addition to hindering the safe ingress, egress, and crossing of traffic from intersecting Rieder roadways;
WHEREAS, numerous residents gain ingress and egress from their property via garages fronting
Weslayan;
WHEREAS, a situation Of increased traffic congestion would resuh with this volume of bus
traffic;
WHEREAS, this slowing of traffic flow would result in undesirable "cut - through" traffic onto
local streets within West U;
WHEREAS, these impacted local streets are also pedestrian paths for the above combined
school children; as well as, paths for pedestrian and bicycle traffic far several parks and recreational
venues such as the West U Recreation Center, Huntington Park, and Colonial Parkand Pool;
WHEREAS, West U respectfully requests Metro's reconsideration of other seemingly more
suitable roadways through and near West U.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST UNIVERSITY
PLACE, TE XAS:
Section 1. That the facts and recitations set forth in the preamble of this resolution are
accurate and correct.
Section 3. That West U asks Metro to strongly consider a route through or near West U
otherthan the proposed route on Wesleyan Street.
