Present: John Neighbors (Chair), Stan McCandless, George Baker, Joe Mitchell, Michelle Moore, Sarah
Ballanfant, Mary Ryerson, Janet Vrancken, Pieter Vrancken. Absent: Chuck Guffey, Virginia Lootens,
Lyndon McKnight, Selby Clark. Staff: Tim O'Connor, Toby Brooks. Councilwoman Joan Johnson. The
Meeting was called to order at 2:02PM. The Minutes of the April 12th meeting were approved.
Activities (Toby Brooks) The Hula Hoop class has attracted 4 members with a possible additional 3.
WU receives free bussing for its excursions from the Harris County. Up to now it was necessary for there
to be a minimum of 10 participants. That requirement has now increased to 15. The Board should help
by participating personally and by promoting the excursions. Non-residents can participate but it is
preferable that our numbers consist of residents only. A question was asked regarding participation of
residents of The Terrace. It is felt that to encourage such participation may take numbers away from The
Terrace's own excursions. Sarah Ballanfant suggested that publicity material for all WU outings be left at
all pharmacies in the immediate neighborhood. There was some discussion on whether "Good Neighbor
Team" and "Senior Services" are the most appropriate titles for our groups. More thought is needed.
APAC No report
Council (Joan Johnson) The telephone survey organized by Richard Murray (U of H) is taking place at
present. The principal topics are recycling, garbage pick-up, noise from leaf blowers. A minimum of 400
replies is expected. From the three meetings held to consider parking problems in our city it appears that
the principal problem is that there are 17 different street widths so that a comprehensive solution is
impossible. A report is expected but it appears that decisions may have to be made on a case by case
basis. An independent survey on Parks & Recreation department and other topics (to include titles
mentioned above) is being considered. The serving of alcohol at any functions in rented Centers (if
approved) will require a police presence. Permit cost recommended was $25.00. Permits are for rental
functions that are 100% private; City related fund raisers and City sponsored events.
Good Neighbor Team (Michelle Moore) A presentation on Alzheimer's was given for on April 19th
meeting. The May 17"' meeting will plan for the June 20"' distributions. The Team will ask whether a
Hurricane Plan is in effect. HEB would like to donate two bottles of water per recipient. WU Rotary has
contributed the key ring lights. Michelle Moore and Becky Arnold (together with Toby Brooks) will be
drafting guidelines for Handyman projects. There are currently 12 persons on the Handy man team -
some more active than others. Topics for consideration include: whether or not a project should be paid
for; whether Handymen should be provided cell phones; liability issues - are these covered by the City
(acting for the GNT) or is liability personal; should a liability release be obtained from the householder. A
meeting to consider these and other issues will be held at Becky Arnold's house on June 7"' starting at
5:30PM.
PARD (Tim O'Connor) Members were referred to the Weekly Operations Summary for May 4"' through
11"'.
Any Other Business Three ladies now constitute the Walking Club. A Zumba Gold class will start in July
on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4-5PM.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday June 14"'. There will be no meetings in July and August.
The Meeting was adjourned at 2:50PM
