1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by the chair John Wilkinson.
II. Approval of Minutes: Following a motion by Mellisa Pfko, the Nov. 9th minutes were
approved.
III. Park Land Acquisition and Park Expansion: John and Burt met with some neighbors and
got a perspective of previous park expansion efforts. Some of the questions are: Is there a
desire for new park lands and how will park property be acquired and used? If there is
interest in acquiring new park lands, further financing will need to be discussed.
IV. Sub-Committee Appointments: John passed around a final copy of the self-nominated sub-
committee appointments. Sub-committees will work with a member of the PARR staff.
V. Planning forward PRB Sub-Committees: Tim O'Connor gave an overview of the 5 Sub-
Committees: Program Planning, Customer Service, Communications & PR, Facilities and
Park Acquisition. Scope, staff support, availability of meeting space and reporting were all
discussed. A meeting schedule will be sent out to all of the Park and Recreation Board in
case anyone would like to attend a committee on which they do not serve.
VI. Tour of WUP Parks and Facilities: A tour of the WUP Parks and Facilities will occur on
January 7`h. Board members will meet at 7:45 for a light breakfast and tour.
VII. Friends Overview: Leah Ragiel gave a summary of the Friends Board meeting which she
attended earlier in the day. The Park Lover's Ball has a capacity of 564 people and is
almost sold-out. The Donor Wall, Judson Park, sale of WUP gear and the 10-year Park Plan
Proposed Renovation Schedule were also discussed.
VIII. Board Updates: Park Ambassadors gave brief reports about their parks. Wording on "No
Parking" signs at Huffington Park was referred to the Public Works Traffic Control for
resolution. Tim gave an update on the Rec Center pool pump and flooring. If the pool is
closed for several days, members will be able to use facilities at the Weekley YMCA.
IX. Staff Updates: Tim gave an update on the new Judson Park deck which is currently being
installed. He also gave an update on the 5-12 playground on the east end of Judson Park.
Tim is waiting to hear back from the City of Houston regarding the Poo Free Parks. Bellaire
appears to be on board for the program. If the City of Houston does not respond, Tim will
talk with Harris County. The park signs may or may not happen. Tim briefly reviewed park
naming rights.
X. Citizen's Comments: There were no citizen's comments.
XI. New Business: John asked the City Council members who were present if they could
establish a contact person for the PRE.
Adjournment: Following a motion by Susan Reeves, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.
The next meeting is scheduled for January 4, 2012 C7a 6:30 pm in the conference room at the
Recreation Center.
