John Old - Is currently is a member at the Y, but he doesn't think that he can afford the
fees for the Rec Center. He's a senior.
Cathy Wright - Thinks the fees are completely reasonable, but does think that there should
be some concessions for the seniors.
Steve Brown - Agrees with Kathy's comments. He's 70 and has been getting a "free ride"
for the last five years, but he's also a taxpayer. Taxpayers in general shouldn't be paying
an inordinate amount for operations and maintenance of the new facilities. "Young" seniors
are increasingly able to pay these fees, with some exceptions. He suggested raising the
senior discount age level.
Charles May - doesn't want to price people out by charging for both membership and
programs.
Janine - Will there be an opportunity to lower the membership fees in the shorter term, i.e.
before we have a year's experience? Kevin said that the membership rates are monthly,
with no commitment. The member can cancel their membership at any time.
Janine - Feels the rental rate for the Scout House is too high, Tim will look into
alternatives to the current cleaning company. The janitorial fee ($75) is a straight pass
through. The wording for this item will be changed to "market rate". Janine then
proposed a rental fee of $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Kevin agreed to the
change.
Teresa - Concerned about costs for larger families. She has a membership at LA Fitness'
which includes all classes. If she were to join the Recreation Center at the individual rate,
and then want to take a bunch of classes (spinning, step, etc) - what would it cost? She
asked if we are really offering a viable alternative. Kevin said that we are not trying to be
all things to all people. We are simply trying to come up with a reasonable and fair fee
structure.
Charles - If the fees are too high, it will be difficult for the community to come together at
an affordable facility. Kevin responded that the definition of reasonable and accessible is
in the heart of the beholder, and we've heard several folks say that they think these fees
are reasonable.
Janine - Asked if we could factor in a discount for children 2 and under? It was agreed
that this question should be addressed by Council.
The motion to accept the fee schedules, as modified during the meeting was unanimously
approved.
