Present: John Neighbors (Chairman), Stan McCandless, Barbara Marvin, Mary Lee Gray, Virginia Lootens,
Jo Lukens, Mary Ryerson, Joan Johnson, Lyndon McKnight, Selby Clark, Janet Vrancken, Pieter Vrancken.
Absent: Celia Chipman. Staff: Tim O'Connor, Toby Brooks. Guests: Councilman Steven Segal, Sarah
Waisanen.
The Meeting was called to order at 1:58PM. The Minutes were approved with one small change.
Activities (Toby Brooks) Work on the Community Center is ahead of schedule. The senior room is
98% complete. The kitchen and two small rooms are 80% complete with new flooring, new ceilings and
new paintwork. There is less progress on the Auditorium as this space was used for staging and storage
of materials but energy saving dimmable lighting has been installed. There are as yet no fixtures in the
bathrooms but the sewer line has been repaired. A viewing will be scheduled for the Board prior to the
official opening. Classes are all well attended: Line dancing has 18 regular members; Water aerobics has
50; Theme meals have 40% use; Shakespeare has 25 regular members and the water color class is at
15. An excursion is planned to Bastrop for a visit to the car museum.
APAC (Joan Johnson) The meeting on May 5"' was mainly concerned with funding. Celebration of
Older American Month will be held from 10:00AM to 1:OOPM on May 18th in the Chinese Community
Center 9800 Town Park. Booths are still available. Volunteers are needed. Seniors over the age of 100
will be recognized on May 26"'. AAA will deliver flowers to the honorees. Joan has a call in to Marilyn
Vargui (713-595-8183) to see if people can still be added. Volunteers are needed. Joan will obtain further
information and forward it. National Senior Olympics are to be held in Houston June 16-30 at the Jewish
Community Center. Attendance is free. Donna Moran is seeking volunteers. More information will follow.
A presentation on the Texas Investor Protection Plan was made by Mogey Lovelle, Assistant Director of
Enforcement and Texas State Securities Board. Mogey or her associate can be reached at 713-426-0336.
Council Meeting Report (Steven Segal) Council authorized the City Manager to negotiate and
complete the purchase of 4.4 acre/feet of detention in the Meyer Track from Harris County Flood Control
District for $403,700 (the cost of construction) This will enable the removal of approximately one third of
the restrictor. May was named Older Americans Month and representatives of our Senior Services Board
received the proclamation. A second recycle bin will be made available free to any residents requesting
one by May 31't. Members were reminded that the election of the Mayor and Councillors will take place
this Saturday May 14"' (for those who have not yet voted). The Chairman thanked Councilman Segal for
his regular attendance at our Board Meetings.
Good Neighbor (Mary Lee Gray) The next meeting will be held in the Recreation Center at 2PM on
Thursday 19"' May to plan deliveries for July 4"'.
PARD (Toby Brooks) An open house party will be held at 5:30PM on May 22nd in Judson Park for all the
residents of "The Chimney". There will be games for the children and hamburgers and hot dogs. (Mary
Lee Gray noted that not all residents appeared to have received an invitation. Tim O'Connor stated that
this was hard to understand as there are 352 homes in the area and 400 invitations had been printed).
The Friends' Guild has raised $150,000 towards phase I of the Park renewal and a non-aggressive
fundraiser will attempt to raise funds towards phase II. Jeff Trahan (a graduate of Texas A & M with
expertise in landscaping and irrigation) has been hired for the position of Parks Crew Leader. There have
been 15 applicants for the post of Recreation Specialist. The Colonial Park Pool will be open on Memorial
Day Week-end.
Other Business Virginia Lootens was welcomed to the Board by the Chairman. There will be no Board
meetings in July and August.
