Activities (Toby Brooks)
So far we have had a session of Texas Hold’em, a Mary Kay make-over and a
session of Wheel of Fortune. All were well attended. On Saturday Seniors will attend a matinee of “A
Christmas Carol”. This is a special performance for schools and tickets are cheap. A Better Business
Bureau presentation on “Hiring a Handyman” was attended by 14 seniors. The overnight outing to
Rockport attracted a full bus load. Seniors also attended a performance by Opera in the Heights. This
Sunday there will be a Holiday Concert with a band of 50 musicians. The performance is from 2PM to
3PM. Tuesday next is the Christmas Lunch which will take the form of a Pot Luck plus a White Elephant
Present Exchange. On Monday at 10:30AM Virginia ________ an attorney living in West U will make a
presentation on the documents which seniors need to keep available to them.
APAC (Joan Johnson)
Joan was unable to attend the Christmas Party. The “Silver Haired” priorities
being prepared for presentation to the Texas Legislature will be the subject of a talk at this Board’s next
meeting on January 13. Board Members are encouraged to study the list already provided and present
their own topics and order of priorities before the list is finalized. The Thanksgiving Meals were very well
received.
Council (Steven Segal)
The 2011 Fee Schedule for Colonial Park and the West U Rec Center passed on
second reading. Seniors continue to enjoy complimentary access to both facilities. The Town Center Re-
development Committee will present its report to Council, to the Zoning and Planning Committee and to
the public at the January 10 Council Meeting. The Annual Evaluation of the City Manager and City
Secretary has been postponed until December 13 to allow all 5 Council members to participate. Sonny
Brandtner has been appointed to the Board of Friends of West U Parks Fund. Sheba Hopkins was
appointed to the position of Assistant City Secretary. She replaced Gayle Schultz as Executive assistant to
the City Manager. On Saturday at 11AM West U Firemen and Police will play their counterparts from the
City of Bellaire in a flag football match at Episcopal High School. Sarah Wiseman was asked for the
feedback she had received from seniors on the distribution of Poinsettias. Seniors had been generally
appreciative and many said they looked forward to this Annual event.
Good Neighbor Team (Mary Lee Gray)
The poinsettias are being distributed as we speak. There is no
other meeting of the Team this month.
PARD (Toby Brooks in the absence of Tim O’Connor who is ill)
Bid documents for the re-
development of the Community Center are still being prepared and should be ready for review by year
end. Completion of all work is still anticipated by the end of April. Progress reports on other construction
projects have been circulated by e-mail to Board members as they have become available.
