Tim asked for assistance from the "legal minds" on the Board to work on a facility naming
rights policy. He said that some work had been done in the past couple of years, but it
"needs work". Kathleen, Jeff and Russ agreed to serve on the Naming Rights
subcommittee.
VIII. Friends Board Report - Leah Ragiel
Leah is the president-elect of the Friends Board. Her term will begin when Joanie Ficther
steps down early next year.
She said that Fathers and Flashlights had netted $37,000 and that this year's co-chairs will
serve next year as well.
Friends is also in the process of redefining the Friends Guild. It is intended as an entry
point for people who can give some of their time but don't necessarily want to chair
something enormous. A new Guild chair has been appointed, and a kickoff session was
held recently.
IX. Staff Reports
Tim provided handouts of elevations and floor plans for the Rec Center and Colonial Park,
and indicated that the Rec Center will have "soft openings" in mid March 2010, with the
official opening planned for April.
In response to a question from Russ, Tim said that Tri Sports plans to start scheduling play
at the ball fields at the Recreation Center in the fall.
Charles asked about the fencing at the Rec Center. Tim said that there would be an 8 foot
solid fence on north side, wrought iron on Holcombe, wrought iron or chain link on west
side, and no fence on Westpoint. Charles indicated that he was under the impression that
there would be a solid fence on Holcombe, for privacy, pollution reduction, and noise
reduction.
Tim reminded him that we moved the whole pool and building 50 yards north (of old pool
site), and that the old pool never had any issues with noise or pollution.
Janine said that she thought we were having a stone wall on Holcombe as well. Tim will
review the fence question with PGAL and report back to the Board.
Cindy Hassler asked about maintenance of the new exercise equipment at the Rec Center.
She hopes that there's a plan for it. Tim said that maintenance will be a strong focus for
the staff at the Rec Center. Sanitary/health issues and normal operating maintenance are
of primary concern.
Leah reported that the Huffington Park renovation cost $150,000. The Friends estimates
that that's what it will take to re-do the other "small" parks.
Tim said that the 2010 Parks and Recreation budget has been tentatively approved and
should be adopted in November. Council is removing all facility maintenance from Parks
and Recreation, and three new full time positions have been approved: Assistant Rec
Manager and two Recreation Specialists.
