HomeMy WebLinkAboutSSMinutes061109Minutes of West University Senior Services Board Meeting Council Chamber June 11, 2009 Present: Lyndon McKnight, Mary Ryerson, Mary Lee Gray, Jo Lukens, Selby Clark, Cathy Wright, John Neighbors, & Celia Chipman. Absent: Joan Johnson, Stan McCandless, Pieter Vrancken, Janet Vrancken, Maureen Graf, Maureen Beck, and Elizabeth Young. Staff: Toby Brooks and Tim O'Connor. Guests: Councilman Chuck Guffey, Councilman and Councilman Steven Segal. The meeting was called to order at 2:04 PM and upon a motion by Selby Clark seconded by Mary Lee Gray the minutes of the previous meeting were approved. Activities/ Previews (Toby Brooks): Discussion on mail order food: Toby shared how the ordering process works, the costs, the menu etc. Copies were distributed or you can go to www.momsmeals.com. Private Pay: Credit card on file was the easiest process. Meals are shipped are shipped out on Mondays and also has nutritional value. Program received great reports per Cathy Wright and her knowledge through APAC meetings. Hurricane pamphlet (from the county) distributed to board. Highlight overnight trip to San Antonio. APAC (Cathy Wright): MOMS meals might be shut down but Texas DADS. APAC however is fighting this. Program is very successful in rural areas. MOMS appealed the process back in the fall when it first originated, and it was not approved. Highlight a new committee on aging including: 2 senators, 2 representatives, a DADS representative and a person from the community, hoping to focus the legislature on issues concerning seniors. Houston Financial Abuse Special Case group had been formed: Police Department (1 officer) attending a meeting regarding financial abuse. Task force can assist with these problems. Theft of grave stones, defibrillators in nursing homes, grandparents sign papers to get grandkids (custody of) enrolled in schools and medical access were also discussed. Council Meeting Report (Chuck Guffey) Replacement of police station will be major topic for consideration by the new council. City has obtained two lots adjacent to the Recreation Center entrance as additional parking and green space. New city ordinance requiring sprinkler system inside of new homes has been killed by state legislature; however a special session (city council) regarding this is scheduled. Closing of Colonial Pool for after Labor Day will allow construction of the new pool to be ready by next summer. If done simultaneously it could be up to a $500,000 in savings. Staff is working on providing resources for alternatives for regular customers. City Council then will determine if the city will recover the cost of those other facility sites available to residents. $1.3 million cost to the city for Ike has been recovered by FEMA and except for the net cost to the city of $13,000. Good Neighbor Team (Mary Lee Gray) Good Neighbor delivery scheduled for June 24, Becky Arnold offered her home for meeting location to assemble and distribution of the bags. 10 year anniversary of the Good Neighbor Team, observation scheduled on September 25"'. Activity Report (]o Lukens & Toby Brooks) The play "Little Women" was well attended and an excellent meal was served. An Italian meal was prepared for a Texas Home Help Lunch. The Opera, Shakespeare and Yoga classes are all being well attended. An excursion to visit the miniature horses in Brenham was delightful. Announcement: Adjournment: There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 2:55 PM. The next Senior Board Meeting is scheduled for September 10th at 2 pm in the City Hall Conference Room at 3800 University Boulevard.
