International Residential Code
1. R110.1 Use and Occupancy
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. A new exception is added to exempt accessory buildings or structures from the
certificate of occupancy requirements.
2. R202 Definitions
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. This modification revises the definition of the term fire-separation distance such that
the measurement will be taken at right angles to the face of the building exterior wall rather than
measuring at right angles to the lot line.
3. R301.2.1.1 Design Criteria
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. For buildings in areas with basic wind speeds of 100 mph or more in hurricane-prone
regions, use of the IRC-prescriptive wind provisions will no longer be allowed.
4. R302 Exterior Wall and Opening Protection
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. This code section has been revised for the purpose of both format and technical
modification. Exterior walls are now required to have a minimum of 1-hour fire-resistance rating where
the fire-separation distance is less than 5 feet. In addition, unprotected openings are permitted in
limited quantities for fire-separation distances between 3 feet and 5 feet.
5. R310.1 Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. The revised language of this provision mandates that all basements be provided with
at least one emergency escape and rescue opening, except for those basements no more than 200
square feet in floor area used solely for housing mechanical equipment. Previously, the emergency
openings were required only for basements containing habitable space.
6. R310.1.4, R310.4 Operation of Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. The limitations for operation of emergency escape and rescue openings, including
any security devises that cover the openings, now include performance language preventing any
operation that takes special knowledge.
7. R311.4.3 Landings at Exterior Doors
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. A landing at an exterior door is now permitted to have a minimal slope for drainage
purposes, limited to 1:48 maximum. In addition, the door may not swing over the stairway where a
landing is not required.
8. R311.6.1 Maximum Slope of Ramps
Change Type. Modification

Change Summary. The revised language in the 2006 code requires that ramps, when installed, must
have a maximum slope of 1 unite vertical to 12 units horizontal. This provides for a more level ramp
than the 2003 code slope requirement of 1 united vertical to 8 units horizontal.
9. R313.1 Smoke Alarms and Household Fire Alarm Systems
Change Type. Clarification
Change Summary. The code now identifies the specific standard. UL217 to be used for listing single- and
multiple-station smoke alarms. It also recognizes the widely tested and accepted technology of
household fire alarm systems by referencing National Fire protection Association (NFPA) 72 for
installation criteria.
10. R313.1.1 Smoke Alarms in Existing Dwellings
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. Code language has been added to reflect that smoke alarms are not required in
existing dwellings where the work is limited to window or door replacement or when an exterior porch
or deck is constructed.
11. R319.1, R202 Protection of Wood Members against Decay
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. The provisions addressing decay damage have been modified to apply uniformly to
all geographic areas. A definition for naturally durable wood has been included, and American Wood
Preserver's Association (AWPA) Standard U1 replaces the former G(commodity) standards that were
previously referenced.
12. R319.1.5 Protection of Glued-Laminated Members against decay
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. Requirements have been added to the code for the use of structural glued laminated
timbers in exterior locations.
13. R404.1 Concrete and Masonry Foundation Walls
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. New prescriptive criteria have been introduced for laterally supported foundation
walls so that such foundation walls would not require design by licensed professionals unless required
by the state law where the project is located.
14. R408.2, R408.3 Openings for Under-Floor Ventilation (R408.2) and Unvented Crawl Space (R408.3)
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. The criterion for reduction of ventilation openings has been deleted. The criteria for
elimination of ventilation openings for crawl and under-floor spaces have been revised and relocated to
new Section 408.3, but a new exception clarifying the location of ventilation openings in the perimeter
of buildings has been added.
15. R502.2.1 and R602.10.8 Framing at Braced Wall Lines (R502.2.1) and Connections (R602.10.8)
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. Framing requirements for transfer of lateral loads by means of blocking and rim joists
have been added for the proper continuity of the load path.
16. R613.1 General Window Installation Instructions
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. The new text required window manufacturers to provide installation instructions and
requires the installation to comply with the product's installation instructions.
17. R613.2 Window Sills
Change Type. Addition

Change Summary. Provisions have been added for window sill height and protection of fall from exterior
operable windows when such windows are more than 72 inches above exterior finished grade.
18. R702.4.2 Cement, Fiber-Cement, and Glass Mat Gypsum Backers
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. "Green gypsum board" is no longer allowed to be used as backer behind tiled tub and
shower walls.
19. N1101.4 and N1101.4.1 Building Thermal Envelope Insulation (N1101.4) and Blown or Sprayed Roof/Ceiling
Insulation (N1101.4.1)
Change Type. Modification
Change Summary. New marking methodology for sprayed polyurethane foam (SPF) has been introduced
because the typical method of installing markers throughout the attic does not work for this sprayed-
type insulation.
20. E4106.5.1 Servicing of Wet-Niche Luminaires
Change Type. Addition
Change Summary. In order to provide for safe conditions during the servicing of wet-niche luminaires, it
is now mandated that such luminaires be located to allow for the servicing to be done from the pool
deck or another approved dry location.

21. NEC Ch.2 - 200.2 General
Change Type. New Sections
Change Summary. This new subsection clarifies that a busbar or conductor shall be used to make the
connection between the neutral bar and the equipment grounding terminal bar, not the metal of the
enclosure.
22. NEC Ch.2 - 210.4 Multiwire Branch Circuits
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies that multiwire branch circuits shall originate from the same
panelboard or similar distribution equipment.
23. NEC - 210.4 Multiwire Branch Circuits
Change Type. New Subsection
Change Summary. This new subsection requires grouping all the conductors of a multiwire branch
circuit to help ensure that all ungrounded conductors are disconnected and the grounded (neutral)
conductor is de-energized, especially during service work.
24. NEC Ch.2 - 210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel
Change Type. Deletion
Change Summary. The two exceptions permitting receptacles that were not readily accessible and
single or duplex receptacles for two appliances within a dedicated space for each appliance to not have
GFCI protection for personnel in garages and unfinished basements were deleted.
25. NEC - 210.12 Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision now requires AFCI protection for all 120 volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-
ampere branch circuits supplying outlets installed in dwelling units in family rooms, dining rooms, living
rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sun rooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, or similar
rooms or areas.
26. NEC - 210.52 Dwelling Unit Receptacle Outlets
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies that where a range, counter-mounted cooking unit, or sink is
installed in either an island or a peninsular countertop, such that the width of the space behind these
units is 12 in. (300 mm) or less, the countertop is considered to be divided into two separate countertop
spaces.
27. NEC - 210.52 Dwelling Unit Receptacle Outlets
Change Type. New Subsections
Change Summary. New subsection titles have been added for usability. A new subsection (3) has been
added to require a receptacle be installed on any porch, deck, or balcony where accessible from inside
the dwelling unit. A new Exception to (3) does not require a receptacle on a balcony, deck, or porch
with a useable area of less than 20 sq ft.
28. NEC - 240.24 Location in or on Premises
Change Type. New Subsection
Change Summary. A new subsection has been added to clarify that overcurrent devices shall not be
located over steps of stairways.
29. NEC - 250.52 Grounding Electrodes
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies that it shall be permissible to bond only one concrete-encased
electrode (CEE) into the grounding electrode system (GES) where multiple concrete electrodes are
present. This change also permits the concrete-encased electrode to be located horizontally near the
bottom of the footing or vertically where foundation or footing is in direct contact with the earth.
30. NEC - 406.11 Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling Units
Change Type. New Section
Change Summary. A new section has been added to require tamper-resistant receptacles in dwelling
units for locations specified in 210.52.
31. NEC - 410.10 Luminaries in Specific Locations
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies that the luminaries located within the actual outside dimension
of the bathtub or shower to a height of 8 ft. (2.5M) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower
threshold to be marked "damp" or if subject to shower spray, marked "wet" location.
32. NEC- 410.16 Luminaries in Clothes Closets
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies theinstallation requirements for surface-mounted incandescent,
fluorescent, or LED luminaries, and surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaries identified for the use
where installed within the storage space.
33. NEC - 680.22 Area Lighting, Receptacles, and Equipment
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies that receptacles for circulation and sanitation systems, other
receptacles and for dwelling units shall be located not less than 6 ft (1.83 m) from the inside walls of the
pool.
34. NEC- 680.23 Underwater Luminaries
Change Type. Revision
Change Summary. This revision clarifies the requirements for inspections, relamping or other
maintenance for underwater wet-niche luminaries.
