Old business: none
New Business: Whitt Johnson Park
On the 24 h of August, 1998, the City Council heard the presentation of the Board's
recommendations for Whitt Johnson Park. Other questions from the City Council that were
addressed included:
• Configuration of the basketball court
• Merits of transplanting the existing 14" caliper live oak tree
• Open gate
To answer these and other questions raised during that meeting, Scott Slaney of the
SWA Group presented his preliminary layout plan for Whitt Johnson Park. He illustrated
the amount of open space and usable play area in the proposed layout compared to the
existing park layout, with the result being favorable in the proposed layout. The basketball
court layout was justified with the improved shape of the open space and playable grass
area and lights that shine away from adjacent residences. The oak might cost $8000 to
transplant, with a consensus of the Board agreeing to do so, provided the budget will allow
it.
The cost estimate for the park now totals $269,000, which includes the tree moving and
a contingency.
Considerable additional time was devoted to discussion of court layouts as presented by
Vernon Tiger, a local resident and basketball player. The Board concurred that arranging
the two courts along the west side of equal size, as designed by the SWA Group, was the
best compromise between playability, safety, open space, and general park use.
That consensus reached, Connie Spencer moved to adjourn, seconded by Virginia
Wilson, passed unanimously at 8:15 p.m.
