WU Parks Board Meeting 2/2/2000 Chairman's General Comments
✓ Surveys- Have been mailed to every WU household this week and should be arriving any day.
Fill yours out & get it back in. Encourage everyone you see to get theirs in by or before
2/14/00. Turn them into the Parks Dept. If someone did not get there's they can go to the Parks
Dept. Results should be available for discussion initially in March, but in depth later that month
or perhaps early April. May need a "special meeting" later in March?
✓ Edloe Linear Park- A grant from Harris County of around $280,000+ will be used to develop
ELP. Three-foot bridges will be built & installed over Poor Farm Ditch by Harris County (@
Robinhood, Tangley & Plumb), balance to be designed b Jim Patterso executed via Parks
Board. Utility lines to be cleaned up or buried? Sidewalks, bent es, fighting, fencing. Poss 20
MPH, traffic calming along Edloe? (Need a volunteer to oversee- Evans?) gam.
✓ Edloe Street & University- Another grant has been received in the amount of around $800,000.
This will redevelop Edloe b/w Rice & Univ, and also improve 3700 University, perhaps to
include an esplanade. Edloe will be shifted east and head-in parking put on west side.
✓ WU Elementary School- Discussions have been rekindled to perhaps replace all of the
perimeter fencing at such time that the streets are redone and/or the playgrounds are renovated.
✓ Whitt Johnson Park- Tree had to be replaced. Too costly to move. Park is on schedule. Go by
and see it!
✓ Name Signs at Parks- Need to come up with a sign design to be used in all of our Parks on a
permanent basis. In the interim, need a temporary sign to be made for Huffington. (Need a
volunteer to pursue.)
✓ Bill Hall Memorial- Cupola is being built using funds donated by the Hall family. Also, the
roof will be adorned with pennies and that is being constructed at this time. Once those two
items are complete the playhouse itself will be ready for construction. Stay tuned!
✓ Judson Park- The Traffic Task Force is in the process of reviewing traffic patterns around town.
"Hot Spot 2" is the Chimney/College Court section of WU. Recommendations forthcoming to
Council to make streets around it one way, and to limit parking to one side of the street only.
Hope is to have TTF work w/ POR Board as there areas of review include our Parks.
✓ Rice Pocket Park- Have two landscape architects contemplating the project. Need to re-engage
with them in hopes of a presentation to PR Board in March. (Need a volunteer to oversee.)
✓ YMCA- Plans may be moving along for them to relocate to Stella Link Main Campus. This
would open the door for the City of West U, and possibly others, to bid on their existing land, if
desired.
✓ Parks Publicity- Village News, WU Journal & City Currents
✓ Park Lovers Ball- Be there! Encourage others to do the same!
