Parks and Recreation Board Meeting
July 1, 1998

Meeting called to order: 7:40pm.
May 6, 1998 meeting minutes: approved unanimously.
Treasurer's report: none available.
Old business: none
Whit Johnson Park:
Scott Slaney discussed his June 7, 1998 letter recapping the public meeting's concerns and
outcomes.
Each point of the letter was discussed with input provided by citizens observing the meeting as
well as from board members.
Resulting recommendations:
1. Basketball court.
a. Two half-court basketball courts with a smaller buffer.
b. Existing surface replaced and surface color should blend with surrounding area.
c. Surface should not be rubberized.
d. 10" goals will be utilized.
e. Provide noise buffer on west side.
f.. Enforce park lights being turned off at 10:00pm.
2. Parking along Wakeforest.
a. Investigate indented, parallel parking,
b. Provide ADA access.
c. Enforce 20 mile hour speed limit on Wakeforest.
3. Edge conditions.
a. Play equipment moved away from west and north edges of park.
Additional plantings , low trees, infringing no more than 10 feet as butler.
b. Replace existing double-sided fence on west side. Different fence materials to be costed i.e.
vinyl vs. wood.
c. Fence south and east sides of park like Weir Park.
Corner entrance with gate if guide wires from telephone poles can be removed cost effectively and
entrance does not threaten existing tree.
d. Street tress and sidewalks for south and east sides.
4. Play activities.
Reuse current large piece of equipment - relocate.
Look at a small piece of equipment for younger children.
Remove backhoes.
5. Open space.
a. Open space with decomposed granite path.
b. Improve conditions of existing trees i.e. exposed roots.
b. Miscellaneous.
a. No cover for basketball court.
b. Park and basketball lighting at existing levels or less,
c. No restroom facilities.
Mr. Slaney indicated design adjustments could be made in time for next meeting.
Having no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Linda Lewis, seconded by Connie
Spencer, and passed unanimously.
