Board of Director's Meeting
July 5, 2000
City Conference Room
1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:40 pm. Those in attendance were Ann
Martin, Donna LaMond, Sherry Gift, Joni Fichter, Will Bertron, Burt Ballanfant, Karin Dubose,
Linda Gray, Theresa Attwell, Pat Lawrence, Mike Koinis and Mark Mailes. Those absent from
the meeting were Ross Frazer, Corey Brown, Gayle Jackson, Chris Moretta, Beverly Loftis, and
Suzanne Penley.
2. Approval of the Minutes The minutes of the June 7, 2000 meeting were read. Joni Fichter
moved that the minutes be approved. The motion carried.
3. Treasurer's Report - There was no treasurer's report.
4. Park Lovers Ball Report - PLB Meetings will begin in August. Sherri and Donna were pictured
in City Currents.
5. Other Reports -
a. New Events - Karin Dubose is the new chairman of this sub-committee.
b. Pavers - Ten octagonal pavers have just been installed, and square pavers are on order.
We are running out of paver spaces at Colonial and Whitt Johnson parks.
C. T-shirts - Theresa has designed an "I Love West U Parks" t-shirt that will be available at
the pool. The lifeguards will be asked to model them.
d. Planned Giving and Memorials - Corey Brown will be in charge of this sub-committee.
6. New Business -
a. Home Place Celebration - Mayor Lewis has asked the Friends Board to organize the
annual Home Place Celebration, with the profit to be dedicated to the Friends of WU
Parks Fund, Inc. The Friends would be responsible for the band, food sales, t-shirts,
solicitations, sponsors, publicity, etc. The sense of the Board was that the current April
date follows too closely after our February Park Lovers Ball, and that our volunteers
might "burn out" by organizing the two events simultaneously. Linda Gray moved that
the Friends accept this responsibility, with a preference for a fall 2001 date. The motion
passed.
b. Ornaments - Utilizing the new t-shirt design, Joni Fighter has created "I Love West U
Parks" pottery ornaments. The ornaments are produced by Willow River Farms, at a cost
of $4.00 each. Joni will place a test order of 500.
C. Walton Memorial - The Friends have received a $1,015 memorial in honor of Rick and
Sheridan Walton's daughter, who died recently from a strep infection. Linda asked the
Board to send condolence notes to Rick and Sheridan.
7. Old Business -
a. Sociable Party at Joni's House -Pay your $100 please. These funds will be used to
offset the cost of the party.
b. Whitt Johnson Park Pavilion - The completed Rosenblum plaque is installed, and
benches are in the works. The Friends will probably have a small dedication ceremony in
the fall.
C. "Gala Giveaway"- We were not eligible to participate in this giveaway, because we did
not have two paid staff members.
d. Parks Master Plan - Will Bertron reported that the Parks Board will have a draft of the
new Master Plan in about two weeks.
e. Board Vacancies - We still have seven vacancies on our Board, which Theresa is
working to fill.
8. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Ayers Martin
