Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:33 pm by Chairman Russ Schulze. II. Citizen Comments: None III. Minutes: The minutes of the July 9 meeting were approved as written.Mardi agreed to append an e-mail from Helen containing more details on questions that were raised during the May meeting to the minutes of the meeting. IV. Friends Report: (Joni Fichter submitted her report by e-mail, appended to these minutes) V. Parks Acquistion Subcommittee: No meeting was held this month. Russ advised that we are still looking for suitable properties. VI. Park Planning Subcommittee Russ reported that City Council had approved the ordinance to place the parks development bond referendum on the November ballot on the first reading on July 28. The second reading and final vote will take place on August 11. The vote was 4 to 1, with Michael Talianchich voting nay. Russ complimented Ben Ballanfant's coverage of Councilman Guffey's comments during the discussion on the bond referendum question. VII. Colonial Park Winter Operating Hours Brittany Bakes made a presentation on winter operations at Colonial Park pool and alternative venues. A copy of the presentation is attached to these minutes. Brittany will follow up on these items: 1. Poll users, particularly serious lap swimmers and water aerobics on their preferences regarding alternative sites such as Bally's or Rice University. 2. Check the facilities at Rice. 3. Talk to St. Street about their experience using Bally's as a site for lessons. It was agreed that we will offer lessons through the end of October. The pool will be closed before immediately before Thanksgiving. The pool will reopen as weather permits in February or March. Brittany will create an information sheet (FAQs) for the swimmers who are being displaced. There was also discussion of a seasonal "suspension" of memberships so that the pool closure will not impact any of the users financially. VIII. Family Movie Night Janine presented ideas for a new Family Movie Night program to be held in the fall to complement our Music Under the Stars concerts in the spring. Tim will investigate the availability of funding for one or two movie nights for 2008. Robert Schultz agreed to assist Janine on additional planning activities such as movie selection and food concessions. IX. Staff Reports Tim submitted the June/July department update via e-mail. A copy of the update is attached to these minutes. X. Board Reports Janine reported graffiti at Judson Park. Tim said that it had already been fixed and that power washing under the small play structure is scheduled for August 7. Brian reported that the new basketball net at Weir Park is great and the gate is now working. Janine reported that there is a tree dying at Colonial Park. Brian also indicated that one of the trees in the playground area needs to be trimmed. XI. New Business We discussed the need for business cards for members of the board. Tim's kind offer was declined by all. Tim also offered new WUP logo shirts to all board members. XII. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm. The next meeting will be on September 3, 2008.
