Board of Directors' Meeting March 2, 1994 * 6:15 p.m. MINUTES ATTENDANCE: Members - Ginni Mithoff, Mark Mailes, Donna Buja, Jeanne Marosis, Gayle Jackson, Jere Ahrens, Harry Bristol, Bob Geary, Ross Frazer Other - Gayle Jackson (Advisory Board) Patti Cowan (5909 Wakeforest) & Sarah Ballanfant (3123 Amherst) - Citizens The meeting was called to order by Ross Frazer @ 6:30 p.m. 1. Treasurer's Report - $171,000 2. Approval of Minutes of 02/02/94 - motion by Harry Bristol; second by Bob Geary; unanimous approval. 3. Committee Reports: a. Foundations - Ross Frazer and Bob Geary - Bob Geary reported his letters to individual Friends members with corresponding foundation "assignments" were handed out at the last meeting. Several members reported on the results of the initial contacts with our "target" foundations and gave this data to Bob. Ross Frazer reported that in conversations with the Wortham Foundation, he had learned a group such as Wortham receives upwards of 500 requests for funds per year. The lesson in this is that this can be a name game and/or that persistence pays off. b. Parkfest - Connie Spencer and Linda Masera - Neither Connie or Linda were able to attend the meeting. Connie sent a written report outlining her budget and progress to date (attached). There was general discussion on the brisk sales of tee-shirts at the Lovers' Ball. Tees, pavers and Christmas ornaments (displayed at this meeting by Donna Buja) will be available at ParkFest. Mark Mailes will inventory the current stock of "Just Park It" tee-shirts and report that to Jere Ahrens. A new order may be made for more adult sizes if necessary. c. Park Lovers' Ball - Gayle Jackson, Chair; Ghmi Mithoff, Past Chair - Gayle reported that the event raised in the neighborhood of $67,000 and is expected to gross approximately $50,000 (including a generous commitment of $10,000 by the county via Steve Radack). Dialogue followed regarding the general success of the shindig and its good "community" feeling. Also discussed was the 1995 event. After a short presentation by Gayle Jackson, Jere Ahrens motioned the 1995 event again be staged at the Wyndham Warwick. Bob Geary seconded and it passed unanimously. Discourse regarding raising the minimum price of admission was tabled until a 1995 Lovers' Ball Chairman is found. d. Grassroots - Mark Spradling - Mark was unable to attend the meeting. Ross Frazer did report the Friends now can print "gift certificates" for those who wish to purchase a Park Paver for a gift. Friends of West University Place Parks Fund, Inc. New/other business March 2, 1994 Page 2 a) Mark Mailes reported Cora Bess Parks had tendered her resignation to City Council and it had been accepted effective 3/1/94. b) Mark Mailes also informed the meeting Council had approved proceeding with negotiations to purchase the home/lot at 4110 Byron to expand Colonial Park. c) Jeanne Marosis presented an impressive portfolio of Elbert Lozes's contributions in kind to the Friends including his photographs at the most recent Lovers' Ball, Paver Dedication Ceremony and the 1994 Lovers' Ball logo. Following discussion of proper recognition, Harry Bristol motioned and Bob Geary seconded the commissioning of a paver to recognize Mr. Lozes's help. The proposal passed unanimously. Jeanne Marosis will contact Mark Spradling to insure this is handled expeditiously. d) Mr. Bill Lee of Smith Barney Shearson was present to receive the Friends hearty appreciation for his firm's grand sponsorship of the 1994 Park Lovers' Ball. Mr. Lee was presented with a certificate of appreciation outlining the Friends' plans to engrave a Park Paver in Smith Barney Shearson's honor. Jeanne Marosis and Ginni Mithoff volunteered to get Smith Barney Shearson's desired sentiment to Mark Spradling for his handling. e) Ginni Mithoff brought up the fact the Friend's 1993 - 1994 "season" was drawing to a close and that there might possibly be some vacancies on the board. She recommended Larry Massey serve as nominations chairman. Ross Frazer volunteered to contact Larry. 7. Adjournment - There being no further business, Ginni Mithoff motioned for adjournment; Harry Bristol seconded & the recommendation passed unanimously @ 7:35 p.m. lop Mark R.
