D. Wickerham Oscar Kotterman Anna Turner, Meals on Wheels Florence Worstell, Garden Club CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Jane Breazeal, Chairperson, at 3:30 p.m. ROLL CALL: Roll was called by Dalia Stokes, acting Secretary for Elizabeth McRoberts. All were present except Elizabeth McRoberts and Doris Ramey. MINUTES: The acting Secretary read the Minutes. Corrections were made to reflect Florence Worstell as being present and to correct Mrs. Ralph Browning's name. The minutes were approved as corrected. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Joan Eccles made the following announcements: 1. St. George's is hosting another lunch for Seniors on Fri- day, February 13. All board members are encouraged to attend. 2. Bob Harris from IDS will lecture on "Sour-ces of Income" at a financial seminar on February 13 at 1:30 in the Loggia. 3. The student nurses are organizing and hosting a series of health seminars. The next one is scheduled for February 17 to discuss Alzheimers. 4. A historical tour of Chappell Hill and Texas Bluebonnet Country is scheduled for February 17. There are a few openings left. 5. The Health Fair will take place February 24. It has been planned by the student nurses and promises to be a very interesting program this year. 6. Elizabeth McRoberts donated one of her original paintings to dress up the new Seniors' Wing. MONTHLY REPORT: The report for January, 1987, was read by Joan Eccles and a copy is attached to these Minutes. TREASURER'S REPORT: Ken Pearce reported as follows: Balance 12/31/86 - $1,653.22 Donation, Gene Hines - $ 100.00 Balance 1/30/87 - $1,753.22 Discussion on Senior Services Tax Payor status. Senior Services is not a tax exempt entity but receives same treatment as the City as it is `only an extension of the City. APAC REPORT: Mr. Wickerham has been appointed representative to APAC but has been unable to attend for the last two months due to illness in his family. MEALS ON WHEELS REPORT: Mrs. Turner is in the process of delivering Valentine's Day contri- butions to Meals on Wheels recipients. St. Marks Church has donated chocolate bars and Valentine's Day cards. Doris Ramey's group has made small Valentine baskets. The Harmony Class of St. Luke's Methodist Church has volunteered to do repairs on the homes of those in need. They are requesting re- commendations for appropriate homes to work on. Meals on Wheels has started delivering to a 50 year old man who says he is married, since December 23, 1986, to Dorothy Sprouse, 3775 Tangley, who is presently confined to a mental institution. Mrs. Turner requested assistance in determining if this man's requests are legitimate. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Joan Eccles presented to City Hall the Board's suggested language for the assistance for the needy on utility bills and it was well received. 2. The Board joined Joan Eccles in thanking Florence Worstell for the donation of a T.V. Table for the new Seniors' Wing. 3. Ken Pearce gave an update on the search for an appropriate Van. Ken Pearce, Jim Council and Joan Eccles went to Texas Mini Bus to inspect a 15-passenger Van with a chair lift, split-seating (center isle), 18 inches longer than normal van, raised roof for walking throughout, and a 10-foot height. This vehicle would cost approximatley $25,000 with a lift and would be with- in our budget. They want to inspect a van that actually has the chair lift on the side installed. A motion was made by Oscar Kotterman that the Van Committee proceed with their final in- spections and send out for bids to be submitted to City Council. The motion was seconded and approved. Joan Eccels mentioned that Curtis recently indicated that he would get a van driver on payroll next year. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Mildred Chapin reported to the Board on how Christian Community Services assists people in food and utility payments. Each family is allowed to receive food up to twice every six months. Christian Community Services gets assistance from other agencies in paying utilities and rent for approved individuals. A family can get assistance on utilities once a year. 2. A copier has been donated by Jack Wallace from his State Farm Agency. A suggestion was made that a service contract on that copier be looked into. 3. A support group for those suffering from Gullian Barre Syndrome is scheduled to meet in the new Seniors' Wing every third Satur- day of the month. 4. Joan Eccels handed out the new class schedule. She reports that all classes have some enrollees, although Dominoes is still a small group. 5. Senior Olympics is scheduled for May 4-7. Many companies are donating to this project and it looks as if it will be a fun event. Funds will be available within the Precinct 3 Senior Olympics to send contestants to the State Meet.
