3:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL:
Roll was called by the Secretary. Everyone was present except Doris
Ramey and Oscar Kotteman.
MINUTES:
The minutes of the February Board Meeting were read and approved.
TREASURER'S REPORT:
The report was made by Ken Pearce, Treasurer.
Previous Balance $1,753.22
Present Balance $1,427.68
Safeway has donated $100.00 to Senior Services through Dottie Shaw's
efforts.
MONTHLY REPORT:
The monthly report was read by Joan.
APAC REPORT:
The APAC Report was given by Mr. Wickerham. Houston and Harris County
has influence in Austin. The current minimum of $900.00 a month cost
for nursing home care is more expensive than many can pay. APAC sends
persons to the Legislature to ask for state help. The Health Department
has positions funded, but funds are low so personnel is diminished.
Minutes--Senior Services Board--March 12, 1987--Page 2
APAC served 5,000 meals last month but these were not enough. 7500 meals
will be provided by APAC each day in 1989 through the facilities pro-
vided by them. APAC is lacking in transportation facilities. APAC seems
to be doing the best they can; West University is fortunate in that we
have fewer problems than most.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Mrs. Turner gave the Meals on Wheels Report. There was a meeting of the
planning Board, and she reported that each church added more money to their
donations. Three new persons a week take Meals on Wheels. There have
been no complaints about food from clients. At times Mrs. Turner needs a
substitute driver. Jane Breazeal offered to substitute if she is avail-
able.
OLD BUSINESS:
Student Nurses: The new student nurses start in April. A most outstand-
ing group just finished their stint - they had so much interest in Seniors.
Van Report: Ken Pearce gave a van report. He looked at a van, which is
nearly identical to the one we are wanting, at Bayou Manor Nursing Home.
He recommends this vehicle (specifications akin to 350 Ford Cargo Van -
see accompanying description). He recommended seat belts for all seats.
Specifications will be sent to City Council for approval of a similar van.
Mrs. Chapin moved that the specifications be sent to Council now. Ken
Pearce seconded. The motion passed. The probable cost is $25,000 - $28,000.
Building Fees: G. Hines moved that set fees rules be forwarded to City
Commission for approval. Ken Pearce will draft a letter to that effect.
He thinks Natalie Baker should be in charge of making changes ir, fees as
needed.
Garden Club: Florence Worstell reported the group is happy to be back
in the Loggia.
Miscellaneous:
Ivan Johnson's bed was fixed by Anna Lay Turner and a couple of Boy
Scouts.
Joan reported that the Health Fair was huge success and lunch was
delicious.
NEW BUSINESS:
A Doctor's wife came in and said St. Joseph's has started a new geriatric
division. The doctors working in this section are all residents of West
University, and they have decided to offer their services on a weekly basis
to Seniors of our city through our office. They are thinking of having one
doctor available if needed to come to our office to see people in our
facility or make a few home visits to homebound people.
St. George Meeting: Joan was requested to attend a dinner meeting at
St. George to represent Senior Services which is one of the groups the

congregation supports each year - luncheons, food baskets, etc. The
group was most interested in our program and plans to offer more services
where possible.
Volunteer teachers and instructors for the city have been presented with
contracts - mostly to release the city from obligations.
Metro: Joan told about Q 'Loo. It sponsors a free trip a month. Joan has
planned a trip to Bayou Bend and the Ship Channel for June 17.
Jim Council suggested a trip given by Houston Lighting & Power to tour
the Nuclear Plant.
Senior Games: Joan said on May 6th there will be up to 400 people playing
bridge in the Community Building, including the Senior Wing. She is mak-
ing plans and will need much help in hostessing this.
The Harmony Class of St. Luke's Methodist Church has volunteered to
repair homes in need of repairs (those of Seniors). They will repair
only - they will not provide material.
