Wickerham Anna Turner, Meals on Wheels Elizabeth McRoberts, Secretary Florence Worstell, Garden Club CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. ABSENT: Gene Hines Mildred Chapin Ken Pearce Doris Ramey Oscar Kotteman by Jane Breazeal, Chairperson, ROLL CALL: Roll was called by the Secretary. Everyone was present except members listed above. MINUTES: The minutes of the March Board Meeting were read and approved. APAC REPORT: APAC met today in Bellaire. Silver-Haired Legislature Delegates are proposing to work against changing the current law which says, Foreclosure on a homestead is not lawful." This keeps banks from lending money for 2nd mortgages, but protects Seniors who might get 2nd mortgages and be unable to make payments and end up losing their homes. APAC will have 15 new vehicles available soon. They will have food carrying vehicles which keep food warm. The Silver-Haired Legislators have much influence in Austin be- cause they are truly interested in Senior Citizens. MONTHLY REPORT: The monthly report was read by Joan Eccles and is attached to the minutes. MEALS ON WHEELS: The report was given by Mrs. Anna Lay Turner. Churches are giving extra money as people give special donations. Mrs. Turner banks the money and uses it as she sees fit, working with her MOW Board. One woman gets $107.00 - $110.00 monthly for medicines (for memory loss and Parkinson's Disease). One gentleman, Socrates, is no Minutes--Senior Services Board--April 9, 1987--Page 2 longer supplied with monthly food money. His situation was taken over by a case worker. MOW provides meals for 40 people five days a week. Some receipients pay; some don't. Ivan Johnston is to have his home painted this week-end. GARDEN CLUB: The Garden Club report was given by Florence Worstell. This group is holding their final meeting of the year with installation of new officers in Galveston. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Ms. Turner reminded us that Harmony Class at St. Luke's Methodist Church will repair only houses owned by occupants. A new group of 8 student nurses made their first visits this week. Ms. Turner says Rebecca Lodge will do Ivan Johnston's laundry. They have supplied him with clothes. He is very pleased. Ballet tickets were given to members for tonight's performance. Ray Dadisman died April 8th. OLD BUSINESS: Senior Games: Some of our Seniors will participate. Sack lunches will be served here to Bridge players May 6. Joan needs helpers. Proposed Fees: Ken Pearce drafted a letter to City Council outlining pro- posed fees for use of the building. City car: Joan says Donna Sims plans to take away the car now in use when we get the van. (The van specifications are to be pre- sented to Council this Monday.) Harold Smith moved that Dahlia Stokes and Joan Eccles draft a letter to Council stating that we feel there will be a need for the car (now in use) as well as the van, as originally planned by the City. Dotty Shaw seconded; motion passed. NEW BUSINESS: Wheelchair: A West University lady sold to Joan a new wheelchair for $200.00, paid from our funds. It will be useful in the van. Florence Worstell knows of another wheelchair that we may be able to get. Minutes--Senior Services Board--April 9, 1987--Page 3 NEW BUSINESS--Con't. Hospital bed: A hospital bed from Mrs. Turner's is in use by Duke Landry. Pantry: The pantry here is full of food which the Board agreed to give to St. George's Church. Bingo: Motion by Dahlia Stokes that "overly disruptive people are not to be allowed to attend games" was seconded and passed.
