On Thursday, July 30, Joan and her Staff have planned a Hawaiian Luau. She has invited us to join the fun and to help with the work. On Thursday, August 13, Joan has planned a trip to Delta Downs for her adventurous group. Joan and Nan are going to Arkansas (I failed to get the dates). Seniors will attend the Astros - Phillies ball game at the Astrodome. The tickets came from Comm. Echols' office. The cost was $1.00 each. Minutes--Senior Services Board--July 9, 1987--page 2 MONTHLY REPORT: Joan gave a splendid monthly report (attached). She commended Dalia Stokes on her talk on legal matters. It was well done and understand- able. TREASURER'S REPORT: Balance in June $1,509.60 Deposits $ 198.00 Spent $ 73.43 Present Balance $1,634.14 APAC REPORT: Report by M. D. Wickerham. APAC is hoping for an allotment of $5,000,000 (federal and state monies). They are discussing ways to best use the allotment, if available. Many separate groups make requests and de- mands for funds because the need is tremendous for all kinds of services, such as, Meals on Wheels direct to homes, Meals on Wheels to centers, home-bound legal services, home-bound eye service, home-bound dental service. (A foundation grant would supply money for equipped trucks manned by regular dentists. Qualified persons would receive dental care in neighborhoods.) APAC has many areas of responsibility, a small staff, and many, many demands; therefore, it is difficult to explain all of its functions. For instance, meals vary in cost from $1.02 to $3.55. Mrs. Turner says her meals cost $2.40. AAA supplies just part of the monies needed to do the welfare work here in this county. MEALS ON WHEELS: Mrs. Turner reported: 38 persons receiving food 8 persons hospitalized 4 persons waiting for Meals on Wheels Adult Protective Services is taking charge of Aristotle, her diabetic client. The Scottish lady with Parkinson's Disease is going to Baylor in 2 weeks. (Mrs. Turner is such an angel herself, I think her Meals on Wheels could be called Angel's Food.) OLD BUSINESS: Van: Bids are due July 22. k-Zoo Trip: Trip was enjoyed by all. Sam Perlin - Re: Nursing Homes: Mr. Perlin gave a very informative talk July 8th. Lunch followed his presentation. Minutes--Senior Services Board--July 9, 1987--Page 3 NEW BUSINESS: Defensive Driving Course: Course will be given September 3, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and September 10, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Van Fund: Joan would like to use this money to purchase a computer and word processor since the city is paying for the van. Ken Pearce suggested that a letter be written to those who con- tributed to the fund, asking: 1. Could the money be used to purchase a computer and processor? 2. Would they want the money returned? This could be a form letter asking for a reply within two weeks. Please see attached. The Board approved Joan's idea. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m. since there was no further business.
